Default Noobs first post with Noobs first question

Hey all, im new here, and this is my very first post. check my sig for car details. I hope everyone here is as nice as they over at JeepForum. Well, I have my first question, but probably not the last. Ok, so on my intake (which is all stock) what is the purpose in the "resonator" and the other pointless looking tube. Heres some links, if someone was nice, they would post them for me ? save everyone from clicking? ok.

in this pic, ive "highlighted" what im talking about, the tube on top is the "pointless tube" and the part on the right, that you cant see, is the resonator. it goes down below the battery.
http://usera.imagecave.com/wel...2.jpg

in this one, ive gotten a close up on the "pointless" tube
http://usera.imagecave.com/wel...1.jpg

and in this one, you cant even see it while youre looking down there in real life, but there is a "resonator" down there. just a sealed up box that air goes into. seems pointless to me.
http://usera.imagecave.com/wel...3.jpg

I just want to know why those are there, and if i can take them off and improve airflow (better mpg, im going down to Mobile, about a 6 hour drive, and id like to use as little gas as possible. obviously.)
Well, i hope that wasnt too bad of a question. Thanks in advance

I believe they are there to quiet the intake some but no real performance gains from removing them. Just louder.

Is that a 3rd gen S? all of the tubing runs to a cylindrical looking box close to the throttle body?
Everything can be removed up to that cylindrical box, which has the filter in it. That box points straight down from the throttle body practically. It will be louder and you may notice an idle change, but it will help clean up the bay.

preludepower.com is the site for 3rd gens.

get a k&n air filter for that stock airbox, and with those resonator tubes gone, it will feel like you have a short-ram. slightly better throttle response, that ricey sound, and you may or may not pick up or lose a horse or two.

im am NOT becoming a ricer with unnecessary crap all over my car (i.e., park bench, fartcan, ridiculous paint, stickers that add horsepower...) sorry if i offended anyone. i'd rather spend my money on another cherokee. im only driving this honda because i have to.

say that again after another 100,000 miles when that honda is still more reliable than your jeep.

cherokees are just as reliable as hondas and i would gladly take one over a honda. they take you more places too, just in case. i've known many people to take their cherokees over 300,000 and still be running fine with the original motor (besides little stuff like water pumps and other accessories). and "phateless" who said anything about a ford??

do your own research for reliability ratings on the 2 cars.

guys stop hating on Mr. Weldmaster4000, I too drive a Jeep (2005 Liberty) as well as have owned a Crx and currently an integ. I just want to say there is nothing wrong with Jeep and I get better mileage believe it or not with the Jeep than my old PT Cruiser.(usually on the mountains).

One negative thing I can say about it though is stinking gas prices. It takes up to 45-60 bucks for full tank rather than my honda which takes at least 25-30.

Now would be a god time to own a smaller 1.5 crx, hatchback, or del sol. Man I wish I still had my Greddy fed Crx.

jeep's USED to be great, before Chrysler added them to their sorry pack...heard nothing but crap about new jeeps...if you are a welder (by your name), and want something that can not only haul your oxy-acetelyne setup and stick/mig/tig setup as well as off road and get decent mileage, get a f250 powerstroke. second best diesel on the planet still gets around 17-20mpg. the ONLY ford worth buying.

well thanks guys for trying to defend me. Jeeps have ALWAYS been great. I can haul around all my welding machines and go offroad and get a little better gas mileage than the ford. but thats just my jeep (formerly). jeeps are more fun anyway, theres only so much you can do with a honda like street racing or whatever, but you can take a jeep offroad, you can street race a jeep (laugh if you want but ive done it in my stock 91 cherokee and beat so-called souped up hondas and other imports). NOW ill admit the only downside to owing a jeep is that gas situation. when it comes to that, yes i would rather own a honda, but if i could find a cherokee that got 28 miles to the gallon, it would be hands down, no more honda.
