Default Header rattle, please help

I have a really bad rattle at about 3k, it's sounds like it's coming from the header. Right now I have the entire exhaust (including header) off of the car. Would it be bad to start the car w/ no exhaust or header?? This could tell me if it's the exhaust or maybe something worse like the trans. Any help is appreciated, Thx

Bolt the header on, with no headshield and go from there.

Don't start the car without the header, you'll burn up your exhaust valves.

I would suspect either the heatshield or a crack in the header is causing the rattle. Do what Dave said above.

Thanks for the info guys, I figured there would be some consequences to starting it w/o the header. I'm gonna go swap the stock one on and fire it up.

guys, if you've EVER touched and exhaust heatsheilds in the past, chances are they will rattle. there's really no need for ANY of them. take them ALL off and be rattle free
