91 Prelude VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
My 91's got a bad VSS. From what I've seen it's a common problem. What I can't find is a good description of how to remove it. I've been able to disconnect the plug without *too* much difficulty, but I can't see the two bolts that hold it in place. How do I get to it?
The following page from the Honda shop man *looks* like what I'm dealing with, but there's no instructions that I can find on how to get to it.

The replacement sensor I was sold (by a Honda dealer) doesn't look like what I can see. I connected the new unit to the plug coming from the loom and spun it which made the speedo move, so it *may* be the right unit.
I'll try to post some pics if that will help the kind soul(s) who can help.
Thanks.

VSS's usually have one bolt that holds them down (not to be mistaken for the 2 brass screws that hold down the plastic part on top of the actual sensor). Shine a flashlight down in there and you should eventually be able to see whats going on.
Once you get it unbolted it may be difficult to remove, but be carefull and it'll come out...

Wow, that pic is a bit different than the 92+ Preludes and Accords which is mostly what I've seen...
Does it not have a longer shaft that attaches to that sensor?
Like the part right under #65 in this picture (which is the VSS of a 91 Prelude)---

Now that I look at it, I believe they just gave you the top half of the VSS which is the actual sensor itself. There also the housing or whatever it's called with the gear inside (bottom half)...

Yep. I was confused about that at first, too. My guess is it's the electrical part that goes out frequently (there's been 3 VSS posts in the last day, just on the 'lude forum). I've read a number of posts referring to refilling the tranny from the VSS hole which obviously means pulling the whole assembly, not just the electrical sensor. In those posts, people usually refer to removing a single bolt and then the whole thing comes clear. That may or may not be simpler and just the sensor.
Should I have to remove the PS hoses and the coolant line to get to this thing? I'd really rather not do that if it's possible.

It will have 2 PS hoses connected to it, but you don't really have to disconnect them unless you replace the lower half of the sensor....
What you need to do in my opinion is shine a flashlight down in there to locate the one bolt that holds it down and then get a looooonnnggg extension and go at it that way.

Well, there *has* to be two bolts for the top-part (the part I have). Maybe I can pull the whole assembly out, which might make it easier to get to the top part.
