VTEC and oil consumption...
OK. I havent had this problem before in my Lude, but my Ep3 used almost a full quart in 4K miles. The oil was changed at the dealership when i bought it. I have since had the car up on a lift to change the oil/filter myself (the first since i have had it), and looked everywhere, there are no leaks or seepage at any seals. The engine barely has 20K on it... is it common for this engine to "use" oil? I know the dealership doesnt use a full synthetic, here they only give you a blend synthetic if you ask for it, and it of course costs you extra. So im assuming they changed it and refilled it with a standard oil... would this be the issue? The Lude always had synthetic in it, and seeped around the valve cover, but NEVER "used" this much oil in 4K miles, so i have nothing to compare it to. I usually change(d) the oil every 4K (Mobil 1 5w30 syntec in the Ep3 and Mobil 1 10w30 syntec in the Lude), give or take a few. Any suggestions? Do i need to swap the oil again to "flush" the regular oil out of the engine?
depends on your driving habits. VTEC has an effect from the oil pressure to some extent, but if its normal daily driving with some spirited driving on the side, even with my turbo I don't burn through oil very fast.
My driving is mostly interstate, with some heavy traffic and city traffic... but i dont hesitate to get on it to move around idiots who wanna "park" in the fast lane at 54.237 MPH. Thats why i was surprised to see the oil "loss"... it isnt like i drive the poop out of the car.
As far as Mobil 1 "burning", i was of the impression that synthetics have no flash point? Clarification anyone?

is this a brand new car? cause my ep3 consumed oil like a motha.. then around 30k miles it corrected itself, this was an '02 Si
its not the oil brand, although Mobile 1, though sworn by many, isn't the best oil. I use Royal Purple, its more expensive but smooth as silk and seems to last longer than any of the other oils I've used (Q, Castol, Mobile 1, whatever Acura uses).
If you are driving normally, definatly get the car checked out by the dealer.

Yes, synthetics do have a flash point.

you're contradicting yourself, it's not the oil brand yet you want to use one of the most expensive oils you can buy? Speaking personally, i've switched from mobil 1 synthetic to amsoil and have not noticed any oil being consumed.

Yeah, i hear all kinds of "this oil is best" conversation. What will work for me is one that stays in the crankcase, and protects my engine. A Benz Tech friend of mine swears by AMSOIL, i have always used Mobil 1... doesnt make it the best though. I was just surprised to see the same oil act differently in the K20. It even has less compression than my Lude did..., and you would think more compression would be a cause for "loss" of oil. I figured it wouldnt hurt to get opinions, since i am not so familiar with this engine. Is AMSOIL available to the public?
Well now i am wondering if there were any major changes to the K20a3 block during its run in the SI and the base DC5. I have 900 miles on the new oil change, and no oil consumption... yet... gas mileage jumped a bit from 24 to 27mpg... using the same station and driving habits... the oil change being the only difference. The 06 Civic gets an easy 33mpg with synthetic... was barely getting 27mpg its first two oil changes with Honda Dealer oil. Admittedly it isnt DOHC, or similar in displacement... the HP isnt that different in the two. The 06 Civic feels like the 05 SI with the AC on...

if available to the public meaning you can buy from pepboys or autozone, then the answer is no. But amsoil has individual dealers everywhere...check their site.
