Default speedometer trouble

So my speedo reads pretty much exactly 20% higher then it should. And I got to thinkin lastnight, is it possible that the previous owner had large wheels and had the speedo calibrated for them? thus when puting stock back on accounting for the 20%.
thanks

i never heard of anyone recalibrating stock speedometer. how do you figure 20%? what size wheels/tires do you have right now anyway?

They can be calibrated, but what size rims do you have on their now?

Edit: IIRC it's not calibrated at the speedo, I'll see if I can get more info.

By calibrate i meen cant you swap out the speedo gears? unless they are electronic but i believe its a cable to the tranny with a gear.

It has stock wheels on it now.

Speedo says 50 your doing 40, says 60 doin 48, says 70 doin 56, says 80 doin 64, 90 doin72, 100 your doing 80 and so on

EDIT: I had it checked out by a speedo shop and paid $100 for the jack *** to go yep its broken.. But he said its 20% off and it is exactly. douche wanted like $700+ to replace it

No, it's electronic not mechanical.

<--- looking into it, give me a few.

Edit: IIRC it's the wheel speed sensor.

Just got off the phone with my mechanic. It could be the VSS if it was not calibrated before, or you take it to some place like Ice Cold Auto air, and they will actually have to recalibrate it for you.

This guy who owns an auto electric repair shop said that it cant be reclaibrated.... thus the 700 he was tryin to scam me.

My car apparently failed the smog test there and he had to re-time it then smog it again, prolly another scam.

Are they gears? when i worked for harley they were a magnetic sensor and there was a notched wheel that it would read the speed off of, dont our cars have something similar?

Is a VSS for a JDM 98spec (4.785 FD) different to one from a US/96spec with 4.4FD??
