99 Civic SI Gas Gauge Problem
I own a 99 Civic SI. The car is stock and it runs great. There is no way it can be using the gas the gas gauge suggests...
I just bought my Civic a few days ago. The car is flawless except the gauge shows it being a 1/4 less tank then it should be. For example, I just topped off the tank and after driving around it shows 3/4 tank. Before I filled, it claimed I was at 1/4 tank. However, civic gas tanks are a little less than 12 gallons, and I put 6 gallons in, so it was really more at 1/2 tank full, not 1/4 as it showed.
Also, I am assuming the tank is currently full as the pump automatically shut off at the station. It currently reads 3/4 full.
I am reading this both on a flat and on a hill.
Any ideas? This wouldn't be a problem except I will be driving a few hours in the fall to get to college and back so I would like to know how much gas I currently have.
Thanks in advance.
Edit:
So its the floater or the gauge huh? How do I check this? That thread you posted doesnt really resolve the issue.

could be your gage is messed up or you sending unit could not be working properly. You will need to test the fuel sending unit(pump) in order to know for sure.
Ok I appreciate your fast response.
Whats the best way to test the fuel sending unit/pump?
I bought this car so I could have performance and good gas milage, the good news is, to my relief I am certain that it is an inaccurate gauge, not a gas guzzling engine
