CMP ECHC race start
We're planning on a standing start. I figure there's less chance of a mess in turn 1 with a standing start at CMP...since people won't be divebombing from full speed into 1.
I'd love to see more feedback on this issue though, as I'm far from expert on it.

Standing start I guess then...
Lower entry speed to turn 1
Its more "drag" racing, and could use that to help convert others...
Just plain fun....
Also, if we get a FCY, it will be rolling, so why not mix it up?
But, I still know it won't help me, unless I get a bump from Jack of the line....

I've done both types a lot, so I guess I'll comment.
Standing starts have a lot more adrenaline associated with them. When the flag drops, if you were just a split second faster than the car in front of you, their back bumper comes up REALLY fast. There is also some mayhem when you try to dive for a hole that another car is going for. Though the statistics don't agree, you feel like there is a better chance of swapping paint in those early stages.
In the rolling start, the cars all pull more evenly, so you don't have the speed differentials, and the insane diving into open holes between other cars. However, you do go into turn 1 a lot faster side by side.
Now at CMP, turn 1 comes up pretty quickly, so even with a rolling start, we won't be going 100+ approaching turn 1. Therefore, it's safer to do the rolling there than at most other tracks.
I would say that standing starts are more difficult on the driver, so with the amount of newbies we have, we should probably do rolling.....

Can we get Billy Revis to do the commentary for it?

We'll have all the H1 cars sitting on the track. When the rest of the pack comes by, they can start. Sorta like a compromise.
Although not racing, I'd recommend a rolling start. The speed potential of the cars varies dramatically, as do the drivers' experience levels (quite a few of you are rookies, and this will be first or second race, correct?) - this could be a recipe for disater. I have visions of H1 cars qualifying behind very fast h4 cars and then having no place to go on a standing start.
But, standing starts sure are fun. And look better to spectators.
It was our choice, and I tossed both ideas around ALOT since there are plusses and minuses for both. I decided on Standing Starts because...
1. Turn 1 at CMP is tight. With either start we'll get there in a pack, we'll just be going slower with a standing start. Less chance of someone going in too hot on cold brakes/tires and punting a car into the lake.
2. There won't be fans at this event, so the "crowd pleasing" perspective won't come into play. BUT... it will come into play at Summit, and we will be doing standing starts there, so we might as well get used to it.
Yeah, Yeah... I know. You can argue either way validly. Please don't.
Finally, there will be SERIOUS discussions in the ECHC driver's meeting about "winning the race in the first turn." It is not recommended to put yourself in a position where you'll be put on probation in the first turn of the first race.
That said, someone is sure to "red mist" and try to dive into a hole that really isn't there. Hopefully they won't hit anybody in the process. If they do... Mr. Shultz will come calling with his "scarlet letter P."
Scott, who's 1st lap goal is to get to turn 3 cleanly, regardless of how many positions are lost/gained. There's plenty of time to pick people off once the field opens up a bit

nicey nice.......nick, who will surely pick up that set of slightly bent volks or spoons he's been eyeing this weekend
Wow! A lot of pessamistic talk from people who have never done a standing start race themselves. I've only seen one incident as a result of a standing start mishap. Sure, my car was totalled in said mishap, but even I'm not saying bad things about it. Standing starts are not THAT bad, in terms of risk, or in terms of the toll it takes on the car. Come to CMP, participate in/watch the standing start, THEN talk trash.
