How to get this sand out? (pic)
make sure the plug wires are down snug so they seal, then go at it liberally with brake parts cleaner or chem tool.
That stuff cleans well and evaporates quickly, so even if it found it's way into your plugs, they'll dry off.
BTW, that wasn't the original valve cover was it?

Carefully unbolt the valve cover and go to town. It's pretty easy to pull off (just don't let the crap on it fall all over your cams and stuff).

Either take off the valve cover, like someone said, and give it some up close TLC. Or take it to one of those "wash yourself" places with a high pressure hose and spray it down. Just be sure to cover up your intake, and let it dry off for a sec before going home.
I have this same problem, all the time. I clean mine when I do my valve adjustment. A hose, some simple green, or your cleaner of choice and a tire brush.

Yeah, just unbolt it and clean it while it's out. You'll get everything.
Remember not to torque down those valve cover bolts too tightly. You don't want them to break.

after your done washing the car one day take one fo your stiffer bristle brushes and go over the valve cover with it. Not too agressive but enough. It works fine. Been doing it every other car wash, no problems ever. for that matter i scrub down everything else. Use alilttle common since with open connections and intake elements.

this is a perfect oppurtunity to buy A NEW CAR! let the poor fool that buys your car deal with it. Tell him its speed dust and if he acts fast and buys your car you'll throw in some patented speed holes in the hood.
I just bought the car last weekend.
I had some dirt caked on in that spot, as well as all over pretty much everything in the engine compartment. I just took it to the do-it-yourself car wash and sprayed tire/engine cleaner all over it, then washed it down with water. It looked/smelled like simple green and did a pretty good job (at low pressure). I think most/all stock parts can handle getting wet, but watch out for aftermarket stuff and probably the battery too. I was trying to be careful, but I still got a little on my intake, and I filled my alarm's siren (I have it mounted upwards). The intake only got a little damp, but I was still extremely careful with it all the way home (like 1/8 throttle and 2.5k rpm max, lol). The alarm's siren was pretty screwed up though, but I ordered a new, smaller (ie better fitting) one for $3 from allelectronics.com
Of course, now that I have a new one on order (and payed extra to get 2 day shipping), the original sounds like it's getting better.
Anyways, just spray it down, but wait until the engine is nice and cool and be careful around stuff that you know shouldn't get wet (aftermarket intake, battery, electrical stuff, etc). And never install a car alarm siren mounted upwards (or it'll store liquids and dirt).

I think I'll just wrap baggy around my intake and distrubutor, I think I'll try the tedious toothbrush thing first, then hose it a little. Doin it Wednesday, I'll let ya know how it goes. (with pics of course)
Compressed Air
If you get that sand wet it's gonna be a bigger pain to get out. Use some compressed air then go back and detail everything up
