Default b16a w/type r cams/no vtec

Right now I'm running a stock obd0 jdm b16a/w itr cams. It doesn't feel all that faster than my b16a cams. I ran my friends h22a prelude he smoked me like 2 or 3 cars, thats when I knew vtec was not on. Because my b16a cams could take him. I do notice a little more power around 6k & 7k but 7k to 8k kinda falls off.
Sometime I don't get vtec(wried) and I can't take it pass 7k. But it comes off and on. I mean like my rev limter is 7k but I let off throtte and back on throtte then I could take it to 8k. Check all my wires for vtec, ground etc.. still good(I think). I had problems with my speedo cable because the boot is torn and vtec was off and on but it throws code for speed sensor sooner or later. Right now I've been driving a week with itr cams, still no code. It idle and drive fine. Can anyone help something to check for maybe I miss something? I had a VAFC installed but I yank it out because it was throwing code for oil pressure switch. Also couldn't take to 8k only 7.5k. But maybe it's some where there thats why. Does anyone have setting for VAFC for what I have?

You got enough oil it in? I've had it happen where is fell in and out of VTEC cause it didn't make enough oil pressure, turned out to be a dead oil pump.

Its ur VSS,
dont you have a exhaust, there is a very load diffrence when ever ur car engage Vtec,
On a PR3 Ecu same had happen to me, like if i go over 5000 RPm to engege the Vtec, there is no Vtec, plus no coDe!!,
i think 10:1 it give code, PR3 ecu is bad with giving VSS code, the Ecu only check for the Speed , As the defult limit is over 30 MPH or KM/h, when ever there is no VSS Signal for the ECU the RPM Limiter comes down to 7500 RPM,
JUst for the Test, Ran a wire from vtec seleniod to the inside cabin to confurn that its Engaging or not,
you said that ur having speedo wire problem, Solve it and try again,
G0o0d Luck,

My first run with itr cams I did notice a difference from 5k to 7k. But like I said I ran my friends 93 prelude h22a and got smoke on the freeway. We started in 2nd, in 3rd he pull one car and 4th 2 about 3 cars. His year prelude is alot faster than say 97 prelude, think
because of weight. Dose anyone think if I retard the timing a little I'll gain some high end? When I replace the speedo cable I'll update. But it doesn't feel that much faster than my b16 cams. But I've got to make sure Vtec is engege. Maybe a little tuning with cam spockets and VAFC also speedo cable
replace should do it. Anyone have setting for VAFC?

Oh before I installed the itr cams, I did a valve adjustment and the next day it was tapping so loud. Drove a few miles took off valve cover and what do you know, on number 3 cylinder intake one of the 10 mm lock nut gone! But I found it and put it back on and readjust everything. But it was okay after that just notice some power loss because I think it was it tight. After itr cams readjust 6 for intake and 7 for exhaust.
Well dose anyone think this damage something?

Don't think so. Is your speedo on correctly. Vtec won't engage w/o your speedo.

Ur buddy probably beat u w/ his prelude because ur vtec don't work (which we already know) and it's off a rolling start. Ur car takes longer to build up its peak hp cuz of less torque. Off the roll, he was probably already at about 80% of peak hp as u were probably at about 30 or 40%. Make sense? need the vtec to make up for less tq!

you defenately lose to a SOHC vtec if ur vtecis not engeging, i have heard that b16's 60 hp depends upon vtec,

when did u adjusted the valve, i mean the car was cold or warmed-up, it is recommand to adjust the valve when the car is warmed up,
there is no damage if you havent drive it long.
just make loud noise.

speed sensor, maybe lack of oil, or maybe a bad vtec selonoid that might need a clean up, maybe a bad knock sensor problem, most likely the speed sensor though.. you're gonna need to convert into obd-1 mode with a nice chipped up p28 ecu if you're gonna want to beat your friends h22.. I've seen h22's walk all over b16 swaps in obd-0 mode.. do it, you'll be very happy
