I just got one of these (1650 model) as a present and was wondering if any one else had used one and if they were effective???
Nothing compares to a Valentine One.
Ireland doesn't prohibit detectors, do they?
If they do, expect VG2 detector detectors and, possibly, less sophisticated radar units among the constabulary since they aren't engaging in a technology war w/ speeders.

the law regarding detectors here is strange, it is legal to sell/buy a radar/laser detector but its illegal to even have one in your car (even if its switched off!!!)
the valentine unit is crazy money over here, and as i said the whistler unit was a present. The police here do have VG2 detectors and the unit i have has some sort of cloaking capabilities for when it detects VG signals, but i dont know yet how effective it is against radar or laser speed detectors.

Most of the cloaking only extends to beyond a hundred meters, so unplug the unit unless you want to be stopped when you see the local heat.
Only Valentine is completely stealthy ($399 US from the manufacturer, so you know what to pay to avoid being scalped + Intl. shipping). This info might be helpful if you get pulled over and your detector seized.
Try looking up Car and Driver on the web or find back issues in the local library (I know it has European circulation), as they offer good comparisons of fuzzbusters.
BEL and Escort are usually the runners up to Valentine. BEL is pretty stealthy as well, to within a few yards.

BTW, Valentine will ship to Ireland.
