Mines been acting up lately.. a good kick to the dashbord fixes it but I'd rather not do that.
Anyone ever attempt to open it up and clean up the contacts? or is it the coil that fails?
just wondering if there is a DIY to fixing the main relay as it's such a common issue with these old gals.

I noticed a lot of people talking about 'soldering'.. found this while googling http://www.honda-acura.net/for...43947
hopefully it's the most common reason?

i've resoldered the connections on 10 or more. all but one or two are still working fine. its hard to see, but theres hairline cracks that form around the connection, called a dry socket. easy fix.

hrm.. I'll blow all the old solder out and put some new stuff in..
was also thinking of making my own out of brand new high quality relays.. but there is a resistor in there and I'm not sure what the value is yet.. seems kinda mad-scientist-ish...

That guide is the same one I found when I fixed mine last year. You can see the solder cracks in the pic, mine were broken on the same exact pins. Just heat them all up with a soldering iron to melt and re-harden the solder. Pretty simple, the longest part is waiting for the iron to heat up.

I think honda was skimpin on the solder if you cant see the fractures just re do all the solder joints and just add a little more to them it works everytime

I'll take no credit for that pic because I found it googling for "honda main relay".. I had the problem in the exact same spot. I blew the solder off with a very low amount of air (air gun) and there was hardly any solder there!! it's almost like it's hallow.
The big connections seem fine.. ithe small ones that have too little solder on them.
