Default What would it take for a header to survive this?????

Hey guys, I was searching around on Streetfire.net and came across this video. What type of material is this header made of and what would happen to it after it melt like that. Does it cool down back to normal or does it need to be replaced.

http://videos.streetfire.net/h...E.htm

That is amazing!

Its an alloy called inconel. Expensive, difficult to weld, but great for things like F1 manifolds. F1 engines have to last two races now (the engines are impounded between races), I'm not sure if that's just engine internals or if it includes the headers that have to last. During a race they will have just a little air to cool them, and once they're hot, they pretty much stay that way except for pit stops and when the race ends. Pretty neat stuff.

As it's been said before the material is Inconel 625 or a variant of that, the wall thickness is near .018" They are now using .018-.022 wall inconel in nascar with good success.

They actually have quite a bit of air cooling them during the race

I machined Inconel 416 on the lathe for some company from Stuttgart (no, not Benz..) and it was really a pain in the a..

Really sick material... But i heard that it is a joy to weld it?

Inconel is a nickel based super alloy. There are many different variations and they have very different properties. Inconel 625 is very easy to weld. It can withstand much greater temps that SS321 or another traditional header material.
