Default Custom Aluminum Intake Manifold, I Designed & Built

Built this Prototype IM for my H22a a few months ago (although this actual one was just made for research and development purposes and is NOT actually being used on a motor)

Materials Used:
-Schedule 40 pipe:
5' of 4"
5' of 1.5"
-Schedule 40 plate:
5' of 3"
2' x 2' sheet

Demensions are (approx):
-Plenum-
16"long
-Runners-
4"long

OEM Cut H22a IM flange

My former boss took care of the welding since i have only done a small amount of Tig on stainless and mild steel pipe.. the welds are NOT pretty by any means since this was just for design and testing purposes..

let me know what you think (i am no hardcore fabricator, but i have done many intercooler piping kits from scratch aswell as helped design a few turbo manifolds, along with this IM being my personal project)

^^welded then smoothed runner inlets

^^quick runner->flange portmatching

^^ some of the better weld bead

I still have not decided whether to make another one.. (that is properly measured, angled and more precise for a working application (on my motor)

i would be curious to see how well the final version would be and how well/not well it would perform.. aswell as a possible flowbench comparison from a stock h22a IM vs. my custom one.. aswell as a dyno comparison..

although that is a far-fetched plan at the moment..

if anyone has any questions, concerns, comments.. (good or bad), advice, tips.. ANYTHING!

please feel free to post up what you think!

nice job. looks good.

maybe your not version should have some velocity stacks on the inside. its prolly a little bit more costly ( http://www.rossmachineracing.com/1625vstack.html ) but from when i see people make there custom intake i usually see them with velocity stacks on the inside. i could be wrong, since i only read.

Whats the set-up if you dont mind me asking? and where were you planning on making your peak Tq and hp with this manifold?

yes i HAVE looked into the stack design inside the plenum.. (ALTHOUGH) i was researching other company's that make manifolds of similar design --STR, Edelbrock, Venom and Endyn and none of those companies fabbed in stacks to their designs (FOR MASS PRODUCTION AND RETAIL).. my guess is for a broad spectrum of usage.. ie. turbo and n/a... although i have read in other places that stacks improve intake velocity.. and some places where it seems to abrupt intake charge and slowing down velocity

i guess it just depends on the setup and design

should and will be looking at around 11.5-11.7:1 c/r and looking at around 220-230whp on full RPM tune and i am doing the motor build myself.. should be interesting!

as to answer you're question.. i do not know what the plans are and whether i am going to make another manifold (for the actual motor application) depending on how well my customized stock h22a IM works (IAB's cut out and lower-plenum/runners bored out and polished.. then i will decide whether i should make another custom IM! although if i WAS shooting for a specific Peak HP range i'd say in between 7000-7800rpm which would be perfect for an 8000rpm redline

thanks for the comments.. keep them coming

Oh yes... and by the way.. if anyone is interested.. this manifold only cost me about 250-300$ to make.. (that INCLUDES the materials, gas and aluminum rod for welding) and that is with plenty of materials left for another IM! although minus any labour to weld since it was done as a quick job by friend
