Default [Improving sound w/out sacraficing flow]

This is a question I have always wondered and now that I am "one of those" with that loud, annoying exhaust, I thought Id ask.

Basically I wondering how some aftermarket exhausts produce better numbers then other, louder counterparts (Keep in mind that Im only talking about full catback exhausts excluding custom). To give you sort of a visual, I have a 3" thermal exhaust w/straight pipe and 2.5" header (previous owner, not my cup of tea). So you would think that this exhaust with its virtually free flow would produce better numbers then other, more restrictive exhausts. But Im willing to bet it doesnt.

Im assuming that most of the hp is reached through larger, better flow exhaust pipes. So does this mean that the canister is mainly just for noise? Many have said to stay away from certain exhaust when trying to reach peak power due to their restrictive mufflers (i.e world sport). So how do certain companies like mugen and spoon produce competitive numbers with little noise?

Just trying to get out of the noise, but keep as much hp as possible.
