Default spark plug gap and compresion?....... d16y8 99civic EX

ok well i just checked my spark plugs and all 4 where gaped at ruffly 60... in my book it says 39-42. ive regaped the plugs but cannt see and difference in the performance yet...

d16y8 99civic EX 2door

also i checked the compresion of the motor and it reads a solid 122 all the way across
BUT in the book it says 185, 135 minimum.
i didnt do a wet check tho so not sure how much beter it will read if i put a pump of oil in the cylinder.
im gonna try and buy some new spark plugs at napa auto parts tomorow and check with them on the gap to be sure. plus my plugs look alittle rounded over as well probably stock plugs.LOL

my motor doesnt smoke or anything to my knowledge, dont see why the compresion is so low from what my hayness book says its suposed to be.
does anyone know if thats realy bad or what not?

cars only got like 89K miles on it.
im posibly gonna be taking a preaty LONG road trip next week from indiana to mississippi to see a friend so i definatly want this thing get thier and back.LOL

Uhmm 122 compression is pretty bad for only having 89k miles, since my B7 has 240k miles and 200 all the way across.

ya sorry typo. ya your right.
i dont see why its so low tho.
maybe im not geting a true reading since i didnt disconect all spark plug wires and allowed it to start,
i just didnt see how to kill the spark tho since thiers no seperate coil i can see.

as longest your readings are consistant and within 10psi of each other , then most likely its your gauge simply just reading low numbers (it happens)

btw. i have 2 gauges of same manufacturer both read same consistant numbers but one reads 30psi less.

to cut the spark simply disconnect distributor plug .

my dads gauge has always seemed to work great. i know my trucks motor is preaty bad it was realy bad in two of them cylinders.
but from me checken the civic the #3cylinder was only short 1pound from the rest.
or maybe my gauge screw in is to short which wouldnt allow the cylinder to compress enough.
his gauge has always been used one big V8 chevys not sure if thiers a special adaptor for a honda or not but i know the one i screwed into it has theright threads and goes in just fine.

thanks for the responces tho! im just new to honda world and only owned one other honda which was a 86crx and alittle bit of this 84crx but its so rusted to hell ill never be able to drive it on the road. so im just trying to sell it on ebay.

For a compression test you need to remove all spark plugs and disconnect fuel pump fuse. Then allow the engine to crank over 5-6 compression strokes.

improper procedure most likely, was the motor fully warmed, did you do the test at WOT, etc... sounds like that or the gauge, if they are all so close i doubt they are all equally low.

just make sure you do the test right, fully warmed, WOT, if they all read w/in 10% of each other dont worry, its the gauge. and most D's spec out at 180 or so, only a few people have reported over 200.

Engine must be up to operating temp and fuel pump disabled. Metal expands and the engine clearances would be where the manufacturer desinged it to be. And gas acts as a solvent on the cylinder walls, reducing the rings ability to seal.
