can't check cel with aftermaket stereo
A local mech told my buddy that he can't check his CEL's without the factory radio being in the car. Is this true? If so how do you check it with an aftermarket stereo?

Make, model, and year?
Even without knowing that, I can tell you this: Your buddy shouldn't go to that mechanic ever again.

I think we found the problem right there.

92 ex auto. The problem is that the "d4" light is on even with the car in park. You can reset the ecu and it will drive, but you have to reset it everytime you try to start the car. He said he put the jumper in and tha CEL just stays on. No blinks. Thanks for the help.
You can open up the Transmission computer and check inside for leaking capacitors (to make sure), but I think your Trans computer (TCU) is shot. Try to find a good used one (if it does turn out to be the problem). They cost a bundle at the dealer (for a new one). Good luck
sounds like the trans control unit is bad; Try http://www.ecm4cars.com I've had good products and rebuilds from them

Okay, if you insert the clip into the plug and the S or D4 light stays solid it is definitely your TCU. This is a very common problem and any decent mechanic would know this. Before going to a mechanic ask the following questions:
1. Is his name Clem?
2. Does he have a mullet?
3. Does he drink Bud while watching NASCAR and rooting for Junior?
4. Does he have a Dale Earnhardt shrine?
If you answer yes to any of these questions look elsewhere for your mechanic.

Of couse the CEL would not blink, it has nothing to do with the CEL! The D4 light would blink.
