Default Inaccurate Speedometer

My speedometer is off by 5mph on my 01 Prelude. Anyone know what can cause this to happen?

When my friends follow me they always say that I never go speed limit when I always do. So I tested it and had four different cars pace me and they were all always going 5mph slower then me.

yeah, it's a car with a mechanical speedometer. There will always be a variance of +/- 5-10% with actual speed vs. indicated speed.

Hell, the difference between 5,000 miles on your tires and 35,000 miles can equate to a 5mph difference in indicated speed.

It's simple algebra. As your tires wear, the overall diameter of your tire decreases thus your circumference decreases as well. Your car will no longer travel the same distance per revolution of your tire.
