I have a 97 Accord SE, and was wondering if there was a governor chip in it? And has anyone ever broke 130 mph?

 

i don;t think the 5- speeds are governed. be careful tho don't try to top out a non-vtec f22 accord... it might take a looong time

I believe only EX models did not have a governor.
In that case, your SE should start to cut off fuel at 117mph.

 

6th gen 4cyl LX w/5-speed = fuel cutoff at 140mph.

 

whaaaaat?!... if a governor is going to kick it at 140... might as well not cut off at all... that's already fast as hell!!!

Well, the car was still accelerating when it hit the cut off point. But yeah, not that 140 or 150 makes a difference. I've survived a wreck at 120mph, and I never want to see those speeds again unless it's on the track crossing the trap.

 

How about an 02 I4 auto?

 

i hit 118 in my stock 96 LX auto. it woulda gona a little higher too but i got off it...

 

iv hit 125 in my 90 accord dunno if it would have gone to 130 but it took a will to get to 125 after about 115

 

My '95 LX auto cuts off at 118 MPH. The acceleration bogs down past 87MPH, but it didn't take a "looong time" to reach to hit its top end.

I guess there's one sure-fire way for you to find out if your Accord is governed... :D

Actually, there are 2.
1. Drive it til it doesn't go any faster.
2. Put it up on jackstands and pretend that you're driving down the highway.

 

what if the car fell off the jackstands?? that would suck

Indubitably. That's why I am not going to do it that way. But it's still an option.

 

may look like 118... but the computer is set to cut off at 117 for dx, lx and I believe SE models for the 5th generation.
I've reached 125 with my 91 accord SE, and slowly.... just kept going.... I wonder if they actually had any governor.

I've driven an auto 6th gen I4, and it seems the gearing of the 4-speed auto would limit it to 110-120 ish, though I wouldn't want to think of the stress on that tranny at those speeds. I've had a 90 lx model 5-speed hit 125, but it seemed to hit an aerodynamic wall around 120. I think the extra 5mph was from a downward grade. Or it could have been from the sheer lack of power...

EDIT: FYI, these were all done with a garmin GPS in the car set for current and max speed readings.

 

i hit 130mph in my 94 ex it felt like it would go faster but around 130 the lines start connecting together

on a 98 auto i got to 121 and was still climbing. After 110 mphs the tranny shifts again to 4k rpms... a hidden 5th gear? eh who knows?

 

WTF... Don't tell anyone that Honda gave you the hook-up man. People would come for miles around stalking you like you won the lottery. It'll be our little secret.

 

Torque converter goes into lockup.

i hit 132 in my stock accord v6 ( 2002) and could have gotten a LITTLE higher if I tryed..

 

00 v6 hit 120 at 4k kept climbing but i sh*t myself. not trying to F up my first car

My car 150+ @ 7xxx RPMs fun fun fun...but when I or (you) dyno a car with 3rd gear pulls the A/F and Timing and stuff lean out so 4th lean 5th real lean which is why I stopped at 150ish....
