Default Sweet... mounting tires is easy

Just finished mounting up a new front tire (Maxxis Promaxx ) on my GS500. I never realized that it was so easy. I did however scratch the outter lip a few times... Don't really care because I plan on painting the bike/wheels this summer. I didn't balance the tire but I hear it doesn't really matter under 130... which my bike couldn't get downhill with a tail wind.

Anyone else mount their own tires?

I'd just rather pay to get it done professionally.

Tires aren't something I wanna mess up.

Well... I didn't scratch em like nuts but for my first time I figure a few light scratches are acceptable in my situation.

As far as balancing, on another board I'm on some people haven't balanced a street tire in all the years they have been riding. Granted they have been riding lower power GS's and some cruiser style bikes but I duno.... I'm not convinced I need to. Rode it around for about an hour after I mounted em and no noticible vibrations under 50. I'll take it out on the highway tomorrow assuming its not pouring rain like it is now and report back.

I'll also get the GS on the center stand and spin the front a couple times and look for a heavy spot, I can't imagine at its worst it would be more than maybe an ounce or 2.

i change my own tires all the time...scratches on my rim and a little shake are the least of my worries.

I always have my tires balanced. It's not hard to do (for the shop), and it's only a minute or so of their time.

As for changing my own tires, my shop charges $20 for front and rear with the wheels off the bike, so I figure why the hell not. Saves me the agony and effort from prying off the rubber and spooning it back on.

If you're going to balance the wheel while it's on the bike, make sure your brake pads aren't touching the rotors.
