Default Problem with new brake pads

I'm in the process of installing the rear pads on my Prelude, but the pads didn't come with new shims. Here's the bad part: the pad backing on the new one is a little taller than the pad backing on there now (few mm), so the shims don't fit properly. It's the right part for my car. What am I supposed to do now?

Push the piston in further....or leave the shims out if you can't.

No, i mean the little tabs over the top and bottom of the shims won't fit over the edge of the new pads.

Then don't use the shims. Only risk you run is squealing

Can I still apply grease to the back of the pad backing?
