JDM H22 A1 swap into a 1998 BB6
Hey i was wondering if anyone could help with this problem. Ok I have a motor that I was going to put in a previous vehicle and I want to put it in my Prelude. Of course it is an H22 A1 and is a 96'. My vehicle however is a 98' and i was wondering what all i would need to transfer over from the old engine to the engine I am gonna be swapping. Thanks for all the help!
First of all, it is technically "illegal" to put an older motor into a newer car. Just an emission law that requires replacement engines to retain the current emission systems of the chassis. Besides the stamp on the block, there is no other visual way to distinguish an older Honda motor in a newer chassis. I have enough trouble telling the emissions guy that my Prelude is FWD after he stages the car with the rear wheels on the rollers.
But if you're still set on doing the swap, there are a few hurdles to bypass.
1) Your chassis is OBD-II. The plugs may or may not match up perfectly. Your motor looks to be OBD-I if it's still labeled as H22a1. But the 96's are wierd in that they switched from OBD-I to OBD-II within this year model. You might have to hardwire a few wires to get around this.
2) An OBD-II ECU will require an input from the crank position sensor on an H22a4 block. You can bypass this by converting to an OBD-I ECU and run an OBD-II to OBD-I jumper harness.
Other than that, it should bolt in with no problem.

a1 is usdm
check out the faqs man, there are a couple threads you will find very helpful.
to put a jdm motor in a 5th gen, you have to swap oil pumps, distributors, intermediate shafts, oil pan baffles, alt, ps, ac, intake manifold/exhaust...there may be a couple others.

JDM = H22a. There are no suffixes to the code.
USDM has suffixes like A1, A4.

OIL PUMP?
If the longblock is still intact, you don't need to swap out anything. And WTF, oil pan baffles?!
You can keep all the accessories if you switch out the A1 crank pulley to the A4. The intake manifold, WTF?! That stays with the longblock. There is nothing physically different between the JDM/A1/A4 IM. You'll only need to modify the exhaust by the cat to bolt up to the header secondaries.
