budget b-series
my friend came to me yesterday and asked me what kind of engine can he build but he kind of on a budget so e wants to be bult something with good but cheap bolt ons. i told him to get a ls and wok that until he can get a v-tec head but what other sugessions can i give him. anybody....
depends on what your friend's goals are. All Motor or Turbo? 11s? 12s? 13s? just a mild street performance car?
Theres so many options on what to go with. Each motor has their own potential and limits. HE just has to plan out what he wants to do in the long term to really figure out what route to go with.

Heres my budget set up (built the motor three years ago so I dont remember prices exactly)
B18A short block roughly 90,000 miles $150
B16A complete head $Free in trade* (these cost at most $500)
B16A PR3 Pistons $Free in Trade* (these are pretty cheap tho)
B16A VTEC Oil Pump $Free in Trade* (also pretty cheap)
B16A YS1 Non-LSD Cable Tranny $Free in Trade* (this can run you up to $500)
GSR P72 Cams $75
JE Piston Rings $85
New Honda Rod Bearings $200
Stealthmode Racing Braided VTEC Oil LIne $40 (back in the day prices)
New Honda Headgasket (Metal 2 Layer) $50
New Honda Timing Belt $50
New Honda Water Pump $100
Golden Eagle LS/VTEC Dowel Pin $25
====================================
Total: $725, for a basically brand new, 11.2:1 Compression NA LS/VTEC, which is running strong after 10,000 miles of abuse (including a drive from Seattle to Ohio) once I get some money for bolt ons and getting the engine tuned right... this thing should eat B16 CRXs for breakfast.
*Note all the stuff I got in a trade came from a blown B16A2 very little miles. The transmission I don't know much about, but I have heard from Stage Performance in Kirkland WA had low miles
Obviously you can add the cost of axles and mounts etc but those are required in any b-swap... I was just giving you an idea of a B on a budget

In reference to the build above. Looks like a good build, but I would do 1 thing additional. Do a fresh bore and hone on the block to complete the Proper build.
and realistically, not every person will get "free in trade" parts or super good deals. So consider another $1000-1500 added to that cost for a build similar to that.

my build in my sig is gona cost close to 2k by the time its in the car running... this does not include a tune but will be a nice performing car (hopefully a mid - high 13) for cheaper than it would cost to get a gsr just not as reliable... and it its very close to the build in the above post...

Motor was properly honed, I assumed that was implied by putting in new pistons. I doubt anyone would have trouble finding this entire set up for less than $1500.
