Default Dropping/Reinstall Tranny - Can You Do It Yourself? Easiest way?

So aparently I popped a tranny last night by myself, literally 10 min after my girlfriend to or I woulda been even more pissed but hey **** happens

Its a 88 Crx si with a d16a6 with d16a6 tranny

Im pretty sure you just take out both axles, battery, starter. Motor bolts and then pry it away right?

I will have to do this bymyself cause im such short notice and ive only got use to a floor jack

Is there anyways Im gonna be able to do this myself?

why do you post it in every tech form? seriously, posting it in the APPROPRIATE forum... EF/ED CRX/Civic PRE-92 was ENOUGH.

Or was it not?

Yes you can do it yourself. You have the jist of it, but I'm sure you'll run in bumps along the way. Just give yourself a few hours (4-5) if you've never done it yourself.

Best bet...get a Helms.

Yeah, because my Hayes was useless for changing out my transmission.

It's going to be incredibly difficult to do it by yourself. Taking it off won't be hard, but lining it back up probably will. I had two of my friends hold it while I lined it up and then bolted the fawker back on.

Or you can just pull out the whole engine. I did mine that way and it was out and back in in 3 hours. I had cherry picker and a nice table to sit the motor on when pulled. I changed the flywheel, clutch and reinstalled the tranny on the motor. Me and my brother did it.

Pulling the motor isnt really an option, The turbo and downpipe and dump would be a bitch as well as my turbo hardlines etc etc

Why would it be so hard to realign the trans? get one bolt in and Im sure it would go fairly smooth after that

Im just worried aobut the angles and hurting the clutch or if there was ways to prevent that

Also, do you guys unbolt the tranny from the mounts or the mounts from the car

When I did mine I dropped the mounts from the tranny. It is not hard to get the transmission aligned but getting the input shaft to go into the flywheel and clutch was the problem for me. The tranny has dowels on the housing to line it up to the motor.

You'd think, huh! Well, the problem is getting the input shaft lined up with the motor. The end of the pilot shaft needs good alignment to get into the pilot bearing. No bolts are going to help you there.

its not hard to re-align that, just stand over the fender and pull it up, thats how ive done it every time...i just drop the car down over the tranny so i have to lift it up 4-5" its not a big deal

First time ever dropping a tranny before.
I got the thing completely disconnected, axles out, shift linkages, all motor/tranny bolts, removed front motor mount compeltely, side mount I took out the center large bolt and left the mount on the tranny, the rear mount I took off the 3 bolts and the mount is free

I can pry the tranny off the motor a good 1/2" and ROTATE it back and forth from the front to the back of the car

But it wont drop

WTF would cause it not to drop when everything is disconnected? Would leaving it in gear do anything?

^^ just keep at it, it'll eventually come lose, sometimes it's just a pain in the *** (just be happy that tranny is so light)

just keep working at ur tranny when i did mine i had to keep working at it i did mine. finally i just got pissed and kicked it and it just fell to the floor.
when you go to put it in us a floor jack to liff it up i found it helpfull when i did mine. that way you can just slid it in and then u wont have to worry about holding it up to put the bolts in.

Can you move it up and down at all? You have the bolts under the tranny/motor off? Is the mount hitting the chasis at all?

It's probably a matter of rocking it back and forth and side to side to pull it back. You may want to put a jack under the tranny and use a pry bar to push it back. Becareful not to move one side to much before moving the other side, you don't want to bend the input shaft.

The tranny on my D15B did the same thing. Just wiggle it back and forth and give it a good pull (or like mine two or three). It should come out, just be ready to support the weight of it.

lower the jack holding the engine up down a little bit so it will be at more of an angle

Thought Id update since I got it installed today after work

My onyl advise

DONT ******* DO IT!!!

Get a ******* helping hand. I had my car low so it was a bitch to even get the tranny under, then to crawl under the car and then try and lift a dead 80lbs while it laying on your side straight up just wasnt happenning, my arms honestly hurt and Im rpetty big

Took me 3.5 hours to reinstall it, could have saved an hour but I kept taking it off cause I thought it would just slide right flush with teh engine, dont know why it wouldnt but i took it off 3 times to spline the shaft and count splines lol

Then I tried one last time and said expletive it Im gonna bring it closer with the bolts, it worked, i was just scared of squising something

Didnt break any tools. Use of a 1/2 impact (17mm/19mm/32mm) definetly saved me an *** load of time though

I got stuck on the motor mounts to, getting those to line up wasnt easy, again, air tools saved me large, im sure my neighbours hated me haha

I made a sweet bitch pin punch to out of a piece of rebar (4 foot) with a sharp point, made that easy

Good ****
