Default Seems to be the alternator. Need some input please!

Lately I've been experiencing some strange issues with the car. All my instruments get gradually dimmer, the cd player eventually turns off, the tach jumps around all over the place, then everything goes back to normal. Until today when it died on me. I pulled over the side of the road and tried to start it again. No dice. So I get it towed home and swap another battery i had lying around. Starts up fine, BUT... my Apex'i Rev/Speed Meter shows battery voltage to only be 12.0 volts (even as low as 11.8) while the car is running. Seems a little low, should be around 14 right? Next, i let it run and pull the positive cable off the battery and it still runs. Finally, I check the voltage at the alternator and it's very erratic. I dont want to drive the car because i dont want to get stranded anywhere again. Sound like i need a new alternator? Thanks for any help.
