Best Wheels/Tires for 5th Gen
Looking to put wheels and tires on. Just wondering what sizes are better looking and which offer more performance. I was thinking 215 45 r16. Lemme know what you think.
Trending Topics
option 1: 16x7.5 Volks (pick one of their forged models) with 225/45/16 tire
option 2: SSR Competition or OZ Ultraleggera in 17x8 with 235/40/17 tire
with option 2, you don't want to be lowered more than 1.5". Most performance tires will fit with no rubbing, maybe slight rubbing in the rear over really nasty bumps. Both of the wheels I mentioned are 17x8 with +48 offset which is the sweet spot for running a 235 width tire.

mine is silver too. silver, gray, dark gray, graphite all look good, gunmetal usually looks good too depending unless what the company calls gunmetal is really closer to black. You have a lot of choices, basically everything except gold, white, and bronze.
As far as rubbing, how low are you dropped? Almost any decent width tire will rub if you're slammed. You could probably go 2" on 225/45/16 but only about 1.5" on 235/40/17. Between tire manufacturer variations, offset, and your individual suspension setup, no one here can guarantee if you'll rub and if so how much unless you post up a specific wheel, tire, and suspension setup. Also, do you plan on getting aftermarket brakes with a larger rotor or caliper? there is a lot of **** you need to research before you buy a wheel
If you want to stay with 16" for lower rotational mass, shoot for a 225/45/16 tire. Its maintains stock diameter (215/45/16 is smaller than stock) and has a nice wide contact patch. 16x7 wheel is ok, 16x7.5 is better for either tire. Shoot for approx. +45 offset.
215/45 is good for autocross by the way where the smaller diameter will lower your final gear ratio and help acceleration a bit. if you pick a good street/track tire like a Falken Azenis 615, it tends to run as wide as most 225s too.
One thing to keep in mind is that wheels on modern cars keep getting bigger and 16" wheels are getting harder to find. If you want a wheel that is strong, lightweight, reasonably wide, and made in the correct offset, there's a good chance you'll need to place a special order with Volk, Work, WedsSport, or Racing Hart. Otherwise you'll have to make some sacrifices. I searched every brand under the sun for a good 16x7.5 two years ago and there was nothing without special ordering from Japan. In the end I settled on a lightweight SSR 17"

15" wheels, wtf... Ok, I guess if we're talking a 2nd or 3rd gen prelude, but 5th gens come stock with 16" so why the hell would you go smaller? Anyway, when you increase the diameter of your wheel it affects the size and strength of the sidewall of your tire, so going from say a 16" to a 17" you will notice better cornering capability. The reverse is also true.
Now if you're into drag racing (if so you really shouldn't have bought a prelude) then the smaller the wheel the better. It will have less rotational mass and be quicker off the line. IMO though 15" wheels look really tiny on a 5th gen (if you have a 5th gen), other ludes might not look bad with them I guess.

small wheels are crap off the line, too much wheelspin. they have better acceleration but they launch bad. 5th gen has 16" 205/50 as standard. 17" 205/45 was also a recomended standard.

not neccessarily true. the main thing thats gonna get you around the corner is the TIRE. i dare you to take two preludes (one with 15'' and one with 17'') and do some racing (road racing) and see the outcome. but it is his preference on wheels.

no im talking from my personal experience. my first lude was more then 2 years ago, it was EDM S model 2.0l 136hp (i live in eastern europe). it already had badass 17" borbet wheels and 215/45/ZR17 tyres when i bought it. S was kinda slow but with weight less then 2700lbs and 17" wheels the car was handling and launching like a rocket. i do some track racing so i can feel the difference in handling. later i bought 16" wheels. i put bit bigger tyres, so the overall diameter of wheel + tyre was the same but the car never handled that well. now i have 1994 JDM right hand drive BB1 and it was on stock 15" when i bought it. it took me a lot of practice to launch it well. my buddy has an SI and he bought my 17" borbets. he outlaunches me every time we race while before, when i had weaker S model i used to launch on him every time with my 17" still with me. in terms of acceleration there is a significant difference as well. for several months i had both my JDM VTEC on 15" and my S on 16". tyre size on both wheels was the same so it was only 1" difference in diameter. i started experimenting with wheels. i put 16" on my VTEC and it realy slowed the car down. when i went back to 15" i could clearly feel VTEC kicking in much harder. now i have 15" 205/50 tyres its even lower then standard and its almost impossible to have a good launch, i just cant give it enugh power at the start. but after i launch, the car rocks. it also changes FD; lower tyres mean shorter FD. now if anybody wants to race me i'm like, oh my clutch is fucked up, dont want to kick all **** out of it, lets race from a roll
anyway, 15" is too small for 4th or 5th gen. if i had money, on a 4th gen i would go with lightweight 16" wheels and 215/45 tyres. thats almost identical to standard height

Wow, you guys are right, my bad. Plus size wheels and tires mean less sidewall, meaning less tire to absorb bumps, so they soften the sidewall to take those bumps. Softer sidewalls in a corner are bad obviously, so the more rigid sidewall wins out. Hey, at least I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong
Something I didn't know until now is that if you want to keep a stiffer sidewall with a 17" wheel/tire, you can stretch a tire of stock width to fit a wider than stock wheel.

i'm tryin, im pretty good at lunching i'm pulling maximum possible out of these tyres: keeping it at 5500rpm and rolling the clunch, keeping the wheelspin at minimum. its just impossible to launch this setup any harder. BUT the good part is that this strugle helped to improove my launching technique very much
i used to launch my S on 17" from 5k rpm droping the cluch and instantly giving it a full throtill. it would still jump off. with more powerfull car and smaller tyres it takes more skill

215/45 is going to have a smaller sidewall and is goign to look kinda awkward, imo. You need to go with 225/45 if you want to keep a relatively stock sized sidewall.
