Installing a Power Antenna...
Has anyone had a power antenna installed on there 94-97 Accord that has never had one before? I am hoping that putting a power antenna in would give better reception that the window sticker type antenna currently on my car now. But I'm not sure how much work this is going to be or if it's even possible to do. I would prefer if this is possible to do, to install it in the rear of the car vs. the front.
Any ideas?
If this doesn't sound like a good idea, does anyone know of a way to boost AM signals on a car stereo with my current setup? I want to be able to listen to sports stations that come in now mostly with noise.

I would like to do the same thing. A power antenna is easy to find (one that is mounted in the trunk) and cheap at a salvage yard.
I have looked at the antenna wires in my 99 Accord - the ones that go into the box under the package shelf. Neither looks like the shielded cables that I am used to seeing. Any idea where and how to tap into them for an external antenna?

Yeah, I think as far as the wiring goes, I could just run a new cable from the rear of the car (depending on where I install the antenna) to the front at the stereo. I am more concerned about where and how I can cut a whole in the fender and be able to mount the antenna without messing things up.
I would just go to a junk yard and look for your year Accord with the antenna in the rear driver-side quarter panel (standard location other than the window antenna's). Then pop the trunk and peel the trunk side lining back on the driver-side, look at how the antenna is mounted and look at how the wire is ran to the radio. Then remove the antenna from the car and take some measurements on the location of the hole and if it's got a special shape or anything. Then if the antenna is good, just buy that or buy a new one somewhere. Cut the hole in the same location on your car, mount the antenna in the same place as the junkyard Accord and run the wire from the antenna to the radio the same as well.
The only hard part, I think, is going to be the cutting and location of the hole. But if you go to the junkyard you should be able to get a good idea of how it goes in there and where to cut the hole. Once the hole is cut, mounting it and running the wire should be hard.

Thanks TouringAccord! I had thought about that but our junkyard's inventory of cars such as mine is pretty scarce. I'll check it out though.
Actually, my main focus of why I want to do this is try to amplify a receiving AM signal coming into my car stereo. Most of the sports stations that I listen to are AM only and with my current antenna setup makes for quite a bit of noise due to bad reception.
Is there a way I could install something to get better AM reception?

It'd probably be alot easier to get satalite radio.. you'll get better reception. The only problem is the price for subscription. But they have pretty much every and any game on.
But if i were you, i'd put the anntenna on the roof and run the wires up either under the headliner or you could do it down the side trim and down the passenger or drivers side, and into the back of the radio. Make sure you seal up the hole wherever you do it with a waterproof silicon.

You will need that hole, and wires to provide power to the motor, and of course the signal cable. If the power antenna has some support inside the body, you will have to locate the hole pretty much on the mark. So it depends which power antenna you can get.
The Honda pwr ant quits going up and down fairly frequently, mine did ('90 EX tho, so quite old), Stopped at around age 9 yrs. I disconnected the power, so it is permanently in the up position. My series has problems with the chain that pushes/pulls up/down.
You might want to go with a fixed ant like the last series of stainless steel ants that all cars had, until the fins and other stuff took over.

yep, np.
I liked my power antenna on my 95 EX. Mine broke during the winter, after a few times of turning the car on and then the radio would come on and try to put the antenna up while it was froozen or iced over killed it. Everytime I did it I would try and turn the radio off as fast as possible, but after so many times of that it just snapped. I had to pull the antenna up by hand if I wanted to listen to the radio.

I had the same problem with my antenna. i just pulled out the whole thing and replaced it with a 15" black rubber one. Works okay, But if you insist on a power antenna and the mounting inside the trunk is tha same as on my 95 exr the your gonna have a tough time putting the hole into the fender it needs to go right in to that radius or scoop in the fender. so it the has to be more of an oval shape... good luck

Haven't people done the S2000 antenna mod or something before? I thought I remember some people doing that. Maybe something to look into if you want a non-power rubber antenna.

I do not think ANYBODY understands what thos dude is saying. All the accords came with antennas that rise out of the body automatically.
This dude wants info on antennas that take power from the car to amplify signal.
I for one cannot answer your question, but now that someone knows what exactly you are talking about then maybe you will get the right answer.

no they didnt. the 96+ accords have antennas mounted in the rear glass, which is what the original poster is talking about.
the 94-95 accords have antennas that arent mounted in the glass, look for one of those, and run a wire to the back. shouldnt be too hard if you dont look for an automatic one.

I'm guessing by "ANYBODY" you mean yourself?
Read his opening post again... The OP is asking if anyone has installed a power antenna on a 94-97 Accord that had the antenna built into the window. Then he asked, if that isn't possible, if there is a way to boost the AM signal.
Next time, read EVERYTHING first.

I would recommend changing out your radio with a good Alpine or Pioneer aftermarket deck. Simply changing this part of your sound system will amplify the signal you get from your existing antenna.
If you've already changed this part, then ignore my previous statement.
On my '96 I had a long time ago, the glass antenna was the best antenna I ever had. Strange that you receive bad reception with it.
Satellite radio is the way to go. Well worth the money it cost to run every month (cheap). Sound quality and reception is superb. Also, if you're like me and like to listen to talk radio from time to time, Most of the popular talk radio shows are on satellite radio now. Dave Ramsey is on XM and Sirius for example.
