just hopeing this isnt something im goin to have to live with
thanks for any help

Yeah. How about you never post again.
Seriously.

I have had your exact same problem ever since I switched out the header and exhaust 4 years ago. I even bought a VAFC-II to lean it out, but found that you should only lean out/tune the VAFC for WOT on our OBD-II ECUs, which won't help at all whith just normal driving. The problem gets 5 times worse in the winter when the ECU dumps MORE fuel and makes it even richer. I thought maybe upgrading the ignition may help burnoff the added fuel, but have been told that all the MSD stuff is a waste of money on a near stock engine.
An AEM EMS would definately let you lean out the mixture across the entire RPM band because therir is no ECU anymore, you create all the fuel maps yourself. You may also be able to go to OBD-1 and get Chrome or Neptune tuning to lean it out that way, but I honestly don't know much about the OBD-1 ECU and tuning options for it.
If you stick with you OBD-2 ECU, try putting the stock muffler back on. I never had this problem when the stock muffler was still installed. The MSD ignition could possibly help, but it's anyone's guess. I am having the whole car painted this fall and want to resolve this problem for myself before it gets painted, so I'll post again if I find something out. good luck!

What exhaust are you running?
I have the catback Apexi N-1 and without the silencer I get some soot build up after about a week or so. Nothing extreme but it's more than the stock exhaust ever put out. I found that with the silencer in there is much less soot build up.
I've found the best way to keep soot from sticking is to wax the rear of the car more often than the rest. Keep an easy on easy off wax back there and the soot will come off way easier the next time you wash.
If you don't have an aftermarket exhaust, you might be running richer than normal regardless of VTEC and WOT use.
Hope that helps you somewhat.

its from runing rich.. when water mixes with unburn hydro carbons you get black sut.. i get it excessively with a 11.7:1 a/f ratio in boost
don' t want to hear it weather man it does happen. mine is stock and does it

i have a megan header with a 2.5'' collector mod and full 2.5'' exhaust with a magnaflo high flow cat and magnaflow resinator with a N1 muffler
and i was also planing on getting the whole car repainted later so i wanted to get this fixed befor then
i do have a vafc that i bought awhile ago but never instaled it, if the problem is from runing rich i guess i need to save up for a EMS i dont feel like goin throu the trouble of converting it to obd1
i was also thinking of changing the muffler to magnaflo oval with the offset inlet/outlet and shoving it up as far as will go to where its less visable and putting a turndown at the end and just let all the sut cake up under the car

too bad the build up is not from the oil...but rather the unburned fuel. that is why he said you should never post again.
according to the emissions test i jsut took my car is not running anywhere near rich...but i do have SOOT building up on my bumper.
the amount of soot build up has reduced since I put a stock cat on though. Before I ran a carsound cat and after 4 years it died. Also consider that the flow characateristics of the exhaust have changed when you add a header, high flow car and exhaust with large tip.

Well, to me it just sounds like you are having the same soot build up as me because you have a header, high flow cat, and an N1 muffler (I have the N1 catback)... Did you try putting your silencer in (or do you have one?)... that reduced the soot quite a bit for me.
And my car isn't running rich either... it's something about the N1 design.

yes yes you will get black crap on your bumper from both unburnt fuel and use of vtec. whenever my friends follow me somewhere they always tell me i get a small puff of black smoke when i speed off.. vtec. but anyways, i wish i could help but i realize youre dealing with an obd2 soo, bump for some help.
i'm running header dc header, stock cat, custom 2.25" cat back and flowmaster exhaust... with the muffler towards the middle of the car.. behind the bumper if you will.. and I get no soot build up. oh did I mention I also burn through about a qt of oil every 3000 miles. No soot at all

"well at cruising speed the car does not run rich, since its in open loop (or is it closed loop? i can never remember which is which) the ECU tries to eliminate running rich/lean. "
Sorry but at cruising speed, slight acceleration, WOT, or whatever, you will always run rich. This is how Honda made the ECU. It doesn't really have anything to do with closed/open loop, unless you have a VAFC, which you could use to lean out the mix during open loop, 66-100% of WOT on OBD-II. Since most folks don't spend a majority of their time at 66% WOT or more, VAFCs don't do much of anything to help the day to day accumulation of soot.
One thing I discovered is that the size of the tailpipe and its angle have a huge affect on what that exhaust does back there. A smaller exhaust tip keeps that soot from getting flung all over, and angling it down practically eliminates it. The trick is finding an angled exhaust tip that actually looks good on an import; I don't want to look like a 95 Ford Thunderbird

Heh that's the benefit of having a black paint job of questionable glossiness, your ehxaust soot is practically invisible, not to mention that whomever installed the exhaust originally set the tip to stick about 2-3 inches past the rear bumper (it looks fugly, but i'm gettting a new exhaust in a while anyway, so i'm not worried right now)

ok so i cant afford a aem ems right now, so i was thinking of a exhaust like this...
im thinking that if i get it like this the muffler whould catch most of the sut then the turndown at the end would let it build up uderneath the car insted of my bumper and i would have it mounted up in the there where you could bearly see it
