99 Prelude smoking??
My wife's prelude dumps black smoke on hard accelerations. I have no CEL's and had a bad fuel pressure regulator but changed that a few months ago. It is bone stock. It still gets great gas mileage and has a recent tune up and oil changed regularly. What usually causes this?
Does it consistantly smoke or just when you punch the gas? Also is it an automatic? It seems pretty common especially with automatics because when you hit the gas and go full throttle from say partial throttle the computer dumps fuel and it doesn't burn it all causing the black smoke. Hope this makes sense it's still early for me and I'm not thinking too clearly.
No it does not constantly smoke. Only when you punch it. It is an auotmatic and what you said does make sense. It doesn't seem right though. You would've thought that Honda in their infinite wisdom would have compensated for that. Oh well, thanks.
There is nothing wrong with the car it is very normal for Preludes to do this. Unless its pouring out smoke then I would worry about it.
Honda released some service bulletin about this a while back.
The service bulletin states at WOT black smoke comes out of the exhaust, this is normal and is caused by sout (sp?) build up.

it is perfectly normal and makes sense in terms of physics and chemistry. my 98 base lude does this too. preludes are notorious for "using" oil...not necessarily burning, but using. VTEC uses alot of fuel, and WOT demands a lot of oil.
