what jdm engines are legel
Anything newer than 93, and you will have to run the USDM equivalent parts (ECU, Exhaust Manifold) to pass BAR. Then swap everything out and you're good.

Beware of the emissions system too, and if you don't pass the exhaust gas test, add an extra cat in your exhaust piping.

whatever engine you are getting just make sure you run the us version ecu and all the smog equipment that was equiped with that year. take it to the referee and get it leagal. i know a couple of friends that bared b16 and b18c gsr
Is "legal" really that hard to spell correctly? I mean, call me the H-T grammar police, fine. But really, maybe some of you should spend more time getting educated than bsing here on honda-tech.
to the OP: Besides the motor having to be the same year or newer than your chassis, you have to switch over all USDM smog equipment, and make sure that the motor is out of the same kind of vehicle (eg: can't put a B20 into your car).

Wow, someone needs to get a life. There's a whole lot worse on HT if you're just here to nitpick.

haha why would you go try and get ls vtec or b20 vtec bar'd?

If you ask me, Canadian or American, if you're a jerk you're a jerk, I could care less where you're from.
It's not like people read the title and didn't understand what he meant.
As far as getting LSVtec or B20Vtec barred, don't respond to it with arrogant replies. You have no idea how quickly people make mistakes because their questions get met with the responses "OMG USE DAH SEURCH FUNKSHUN NOOB".
Some people get 60% into an LSVtec conversion before they realize it's 100% wrong to drive it around in California.
If you ask me, every guide/write-up/tutorial on a particular swap should have a huge warning at the beginning that says, "BEWARE the following about emissions:".
My friend was 15 minutes from buying a K swap before he found out about the fuel return line. A lot of people in Cali underestimate how critical the bar examination is.

my comment was not a flame.. just a defence.
anyway my opinion is I would get the motor that best suits you and does not cost a buch to legally put the car on the road IMO

Most engines will pass BAR if it is completely stock (or has CARB approved parts), and has an equal here in the states I've seen LS, GSR and Numerous B16A(In fact I own one) motors all BARd. You'll need a US ECU(for that motor), a new/good cat and O2 sensor, and alot of praying
. I didn't have to convert the exhaust/intake manis to US spec either(I went to 2 different refs and niether said a thing). I had my mechanic drop in the motor and do the wiring real good (has to be OEM or better looking...no crimping, must be soldered and heat shrunk) and went to the ref.(the 1st time I failed miserably due to a bad cat/O2 combo)...fixed those, went to a different station and passed with flying colors. MOST IMPORTANTLY: make sure the motor is the year of the car or newer (that IS an automatic fail)

If ur car fails inspection does that mean they dont let u register it or something..?? I live in FL where we have the luxury of driving anything with wheels pretty much, no rules, regulations, and especially no State Tests that pass or fail our vehicles... It's pretty interesting though, cuz they act like banning 100 fart can exhaust in cali is gonna stop the 1,000,000 lil ******s we have down here that throw'm on anything an everything that has an exhaust hahaha...

The only time you need to get the inspection done is when you do a motor swap AND when you either want to get it done (like I did) or when a cop pops your hood and forces you to go to a ref. Otherwise it's just a regular 2-5 year interval. Many people here do swaps and never get them BARd (either because they don't want too or because they are running a race motor or possibly even a stolen motor). I did mine so I'll have absolutely nothing to worry about with cops(other than a modified exhaust
