Im buying a Comp/zex 59300 cam for my Z6 and I read that the valve springs are required for obvious reasons, and I know this. My question is, are the titanium retainers also required or just reccomended? The zex site says they are good to 10k rpm, but never mentions if they are also required, or even reccomended for that matter, for the big cam, and my motor will never see that kinda rpm. I have been to multiple forums, searched in every one, and posted to try to find an answer, and no one can give me a strait answer. Ive gotten "my buddy installed it without springs and he was fine for a month, then sold the car" kinda stuff that doesnt help me one bit, plus thats just a bad idea in so many ways. I tried emailing Zex directly with no answer, so Im uncertain as what to do. Im hoping someone has some REAL advice I can use. Also, there is no way in hell Im buying the Comp retainers for alsmot $250, if anything and they are needed, Im opting for the KMS ones for 125-130 a set. Thanks for any responses in advance.

 

stronger tighter springs on stock retainers, def not, go with titanium if you want reliability

 

Thats what I was thinking but I dont know how much stuffer the springs are from the OE springs. Im leaning towards the retainers (and probably a set of OEM Honda locks just to be safe) but if the difference is not that much, I dont see why Titanium is used, couldnt have they just used billet steel and cut price and still offer titanium for racing apps? Or is the the titanium just for lighter valvetrain/higher rpm use (forged bottom ends etc)? 130 bucks is not that much for the extra insurance of **** not coming apart when I wind that ****** up tight though.

 

Titanium is used because its lighter, which allows for quicker revving, and stronger than steel, so they'll last longer. I'd go with the Ti retainers if I were you. Doesn't have to come from comp. jus because thats where u got the cam.
