someone correct me of i'm wrong but i thinks it's supposed to have some play.
you don't drive with your hand on the shifter(while not shifting) like those cool guys do? if so, it'll only wear down the forks more. causing excesessive play on the shifter.

 

that would have nothing to do with messing up the fork though. that typically leads to mushy syncros and bad detents and interlocks in the tranny

 

hes talking about the clutch release fork, yes it will have play in it when no pressure is a applied to the slave cyl. hopefully the you applied some grease to the balled end of the pushrod, keeps from wear and squeaking
