What should I expect to pay for a bottom end refresh?
Good day all.
So here's the situation.
My 95 EX D16Z6 seems to be coming down with a case of the 140k rod knock. It's not the first time I've heard the sound, but the first time in my own car.
So I've got a full motor ready to go, but it's only a D15B. I have heard it run, but I have no idea what the mileage is so the true condition is fairly unknown.
I was thinking of taking one of the old (spun bearing) D16Z6 blocks I've got sitting in the garage, get it refreshed, and put my current head on it and drop it in the EX.
Cost is always a concern, so before I get into this, what should I expect to pay to have the block honed, the crank checked/micro polished, and all bearings and rings replaced, and have that then put together so I have a complete shortblock?
I'll reference the SOHC VTEC NA buildup thats floating somewhere around this site to see what it says about possibly changing rods/pistons and maybe getting closer to 10:1 or slightly more. . . not too high as I'd like to run 87 or 89 to save $$ again.

100 bux for ACL bearings or 180 for OEM.
If you can see the cross hatches on the cylinders, then you dun need to hone...Thats straight out of the manual so i dun want to hear bitching...hone if you like. Usually 50 to 75 bux. Make sure they're using the correct grit stone.
30-50 bux for the crank work.
4-6 hours to assemble the block so whatever the machine shop/builder charges...
If you can see the cross hatches on the cylinders, then you dun need to hone...Thats straight out of the manual so i dun want to hear bitching...hone if you like. Usually 50 to 75 bux. Make sure they're using the correct grit stone.

dont forget another 100 or so for rings. but yeah, freshening up a shortblock that is in relatively decent condition to begin with is usually not too expensive. then again the more you do yourself, the less labor they can charge. if you bring them the block bare and disassembled, and plan to reassemble it, you can save money in labor.

Disassemble the engine, take crank to machine shop. Micropolish will cost about $60 (If crank isn't damaged), and get the rods reconditioned as well.

Run a bottlebrush through the cylinders... It is a good idea to deglaze the cylinder walls for new piston rings.

Yeah I figured that. I just wondered if they'd need to kinda part-way assemble it in order to determine if more crank work is necessary, and if different bearings need to be used.
Which book should I look in for all clearances and assembly specs?

Hey I'm down to do it myself - my friend works for some truck supply spot so he has a deep spending account with Snap-On so I'm sure we could get the tools easily. Like I said in the above post, which book should I use? I have the Helms manual and I'm not sure if it's enough.
I'd consider myself fairly fluent in head-up assembly, but this will be my first attempt at a bottom end.
