My friend recently finished his built GSR turbo motor.
Head: stock rebuilt w/ skunk 2 IM
Block: 81.5mm 9:1 wiseco pistons, SCAT rods, ACL bearings, new water pump/timing belt, GE blockguard
We had trouble getting it to start at first, but we later found out that the head had a leak, so we sent it back to the machine shop and got that solved. Finally got it to start, and there was a lot of valvetrain noise. Checked valve adjustment and it was all within spec. After driving it and tuning it, we saw excessive smoke coming from the valve coverhose. The smoke smells like fuel. Also, the "valvetrain" noise is still there. Its pretty noticeable at idle, but as the RPMs go up, the sound goes away.
And after 1500 miles on it (after breaking it in and retuning), the noise and smoke is still there.
So, what do u guys think the smoke is? And what do u think is causing the noise?

Is the car tuned, with what? if it smells like fuel than my best guess is a valve problem/somehow fuel is getting out of the combustion chamber un-burned however that happens.
A little smoke is normal under power on a FI car, but if it is smoking out the valvecover breather when its idleing than I would say you definately have a bad case of blowby. Either way something is very wrong.
I would ditch that blockguard, heard about those things making the sleeves out of round in some cases

Tuned with Crome Pro. I told him the horror stories i heard about blockguard, but it's a little too late to take it out now. He'll just stick with it.

Here's the iffy part about the compression. Before, when it didnt start, compresison was pretty out of wack. Something along the lines of 90, 120, 150, and 80 or some ****. After sending the head to the shop and getting everything to run, compression is now:
150, 140, 150 and 140. I consider that pretty damn low.. but then again, I'm only basing that compared to the stock GSR compression and stock LS compression specs.

Your compression is out of wack.... A new motor with 9.1 cr should have more than that. Maybe faulty assembly?

Bullshit, my motor got 45 miles on at @ 9.1 to 1 comp and I tested 180 across the board, his motor has 1500 miles on it and is wayyy past the ring break in stage.
You got oil blowin by the rings

Thats what im guessing too. Perhaps i should tell them to do a leak down test and another compression test with the "adding oil" method to see if the rings are sealed correctly or not.

How can that compression be fine? It's much too low... My motor has about 10 miles on it, I have 8.8cr which is lower than his and I'm getting 175psi across the board.

is this Seans GSR....most likely the smoke coming out from the valve cover is rings haven't seated yet...hopefully you guys solve this problem...sounds like a solid setup..

Yea its seans car. but its been well over 1500 miles. I'd think the rings be settled by now...
