Crank Pulley Bolt pwnz me
I CAN'T get this thing off by hand. I've already broken a few extension bars and screwdrivers. The problem is that my civic is a DX, and doesn't come with the hexagonal pulley that you can use the "harmonic balance pulley tool" on to keep the pulley from turning when you torque the bolt off.

I'm willing to bite bullet and get an impact wrench...or at least find someone who has one. But how will the pulley be held in place to keep the engine from turning over?

get somebody in the car....have them put it in reverse or first and put the brakes down so the car doesn't move at all...and neither iwll ur crank/pulley
Take a breaker bar with a long handle and set it right up..if still not go, put a piece of PVC piping on the end of it to extend ur leverage and have another shot at it...
You'd be very surprised how VERY effective this method is and how many people including me it hasn't failed at all and you'd also be suprised how much torque u get with a long as breaker bar...
Screw the special tools...they don't work
Whatever u do don't do the screwdriver in the flywheel to stop the engine from moving, I've seen people lose flywheel teeth like that...somebody in the car, in gear, on the brakes, and ur good to go, gl

Yeah...my other problem is that my car's an automatic. I already tried pressing the brakes in drive/park/neutral. The crank turns every time!
I AM willing to go impact...but I'm afraid I'll have the same problem with the engine turning over.

Yes it is the best investment you can make. wont work all the time but %90 it will.

Alright. I'm gonna go with the impact wrench then. Anyone else wanna confirm that SVOboy is right about this? Thanks for the help ppl.

impact wrench is the next thing I'd try, do what SVO boy said.....after taht, iono, because I don't have any experience using that "crank pulley tool" -- didn't even know one existed till I came on ht and even then never used one nor looked into one

Yup. DX crank pulley is just round on the inside. The EX pulley (and apparently yours too for some reason) looks like this:
Mine unfortunately doesn't have the 6 hexagonal sides around the bolt. Which basically renders the harmonic balancer tool worthless.

So you put a chain wrench around the pulley? Isn't that going to bend or mess up the grooves for the belt? Tearing belts is not a good thing. But a chain wrench is way less expensive than an impact wrench...both of which I'll probably only use once. How did you use the chain wrench??

I jus want someone to explain how holding the brakes is going to keep the crank from turning???
rofl.... i was gonna ask the same question.
i've had my share of removing honda crank pullies. i used a chain clamp and a long breaker bar or with a long pipe to extend my ratchet.
the chain clamp looks like a vise grip with a long bicycle chain attached to it. and u clamp it around the pulley and ratchet away

It's no harder to put on than any other bolt - you just have to torque it to the correct value. I forget the exact value (my Helms is in the car), but I remember thinking I'd have to buy a new torque wrench to reach it. Procedure to put it on is no different than the procedure to take it off.

I've seen people crack their bell housing using that method. Whatever you do, don't use that method.

Simple. We drive cars with real transmissions, not slushboxes.
