Default CRX Gas mileage options?

Thinking about trading in my 93 civic for a CRX both for performance and for gas mileage purposes.

My question is, what is my best bet setup / year wise for good mileage? I'm aware of the rotor/plug/filter/air filter/ignition wires aspect, but I mean in terms of what engine i'm looking for and what model/year.

I've done some research and it seems the 88 HF is the lightest, at 17xx - but sometimes that isn't the only angle to look at. I intend to strip it down to the core anyway, one seat commuter car : )

My friend has a 1990 HF, everything still in it completely stock. I'm borrowing it now and I have before. With a bad EGR it got 54 mpg on the mass pike. Today driving less highway (over mountains in VT) I got around 48. You should know though, it's really really slow. I posted a story about it recently, you can't climb hills in anything higher than second. Also every kid in a riced out accord will try to race you because you have a CRX... they don't realize it has 60hp.

It is true that the 1988 HF is the lightest CRX. But it actually weighs 1834 pounds. That's still pretty light, however. As far as the engine setup, you will do good with the stock motor in terms of fuel economy. But, as the other guy said, performance will basically be non-existant with only 62HP and a transmission geared to the moon. A better choice would be a D15Z1 from a 1992-1995 VX. With 92HP, it will be somewhat quicker than the stock motor, but still no ball of fire. But fuel economy will also be better. Besides these motors, there are your usual motors that people swap into these cars. Mileage, of course, will not be as good with, say, a GSR swap, as with a stock HF motor or D15Z1. But it won't really be bad (about low-mid 30s). The performance will certainly put a smile on your face, though.

1988 CRX HF is the lightest. Stripped you can get it in the lower 1700s. Check out the link in my signature if you're serious about improving your fuel economy.
