To those with aftermarket Steering wheels.. Insurance question...
When you guys installed your aftermarket steering wheels, did you let your insurance company know? I know it is illegal in California to use one on a street car if the airbag needs to be disengaged.. If I make my insurance aware, will they still cover me? FYI I have AAA.
Hmmmm, I might be able to say it is for "track use" only.. but I dunno what the legalities are if I get into another wreck, and possibly injure myself. *knocking on wood* that it won't happen.
I had one on my Gsr and everytime a Fremont cop pulled me over they never said anything about it?
I was wondering the same about the insurance as well back then, I put it on anyway.

Well I called my insurance co., Geico, and just asked them hypothetically a few months ago. My girlfriend bought me a Spoon wheel for my Si from R and D. Geico told me that the rates only go up $80.00 every 6 months for me because I will have no airbag. And I had to send them a picture. I don't know why. But thats it. I sent the picture, the wheel is on, and I pay $80 more every six months.

If a cop sees my steering wheel, they will probably think it's an OEM option

i never told my insurance company anything, they'll look for any excuse to raise prices. i get my car inspected with the momo wheel on, the inspection manual here only says that my car has to have working seat belts, theres nothing about having air bags, so it passes.
Bloody nice Tony.
You've gotta make it out to one of our meets this summer. I want to see that with my own eyes.

Hmmm.....must be a state law that you can't operate the car without airbags. Federal law precludes repair shops/dealers, etc from removing them or their at risk for being fined, but a consumer is okay to de-activate or remove their own airbags (at their own risk of course).

you guys have to tell your insurance company that you have no air bag. You have a contract with them and you get a credit for having airbags. So basically you are cheating them out of money. Thats a contract violation since an insurance policy is considered a contract. If your car is wrecked and you have no airbags, but the policy says you do... They dont have to give you a red cent because you viloated the contract... This included not only fixing the car... But liabilty and medical paymets as well...So yif you are found at fault... get ready to give your life away because you will be paying out of pocket for lawyers and courts fees and payments if you found guilty or at fault. This is why people have insurance because court is so expensive.
So to recap... You say you have an airbag, you dont have an airbag, insurane doesnt cover you... You have no car and now no life because you are paying someone reprecutions for the rest of your life. assume of course that you dont make millions a year... Even if you did, the scum of this earth would still try and take you for as much as they could...

i want to get a non srs jdm itr steering wheel, i think they look nice! will add a nice touch to my car, i was just kinda worrided about safely
Probably the only thing holding me back (besides money) from getting a steering wheel, is that once the driver side airbag is disabled, the passenger's is also disabled. I don't want to be put in a situation that my passenger gets hurt from my stupidity.

Tony, because it's legal in Ontario to remove the airbag. They have a legal document for you to fill out when removing the airbag. You just have to notify them when you remove it. It's all legitimate.

That includes removing the airbag yourself because first of all, you can't remove it, and second of all, they require a certified mech to modify the on/off switch.Reasons to remove the airbag isn't really easy to come up with. They have certain qualifications that you have to fit in to be allowed to deactivate the airbags (on/off switch). Such as the driver being too short and driving too close to the airbag, or certain medical conditions, handicap in some way that will cause more injury, etc... etc...
Citanest, or perhaps you have requested a different form? I would love to get my hands on the form you filled out!
A lot of people still remove the airbag because the cops aren't too strict about them. And I doubt every cop out there who pulled you over will know that your car came with airbags from the factory! What if I drove an EG? Some came with airbags, and some didn't... perhaps the cops won't bother making a big hassle out of it. In my case, I had an Acura logo, so the cops won't even know that the steering wheel is aftermarket
I was pulled over a couple of times, and the worse situation was when the cops tested my horn (freaked him out because I had dual airhorns). He pulled over some other guy as well (I was at some local meets) and he was getting hassled by an aftermarket steering wheel and because he didn't have the horn hooked up...LOL.

Come on, the manufacturer puts an airbag there for a reason. Spend money somewhere else.
