Test drove a 2000 Ex Coupe w/62k miles...questions
I test drove a 2000 Ex Coupe with 62k miles. Everything seemed to run smooth. Idled great, accelerated smoothly, and braked fine. In great shape. Was in a accident and got hit in the rear, but everything is fixed. One question i have tho is the car has been sitting for a little while. At high rpms, 6k or so; if you go from first to third; it grinds. Could this be a issue that should keep me from buying this car. I offered the guy 6500 for it and he said he would sell it for that. Do you think some synchromesh tranny fluid would get rid of the grind? Please advise.

Yup.
Yup.
but do you guys think something like this should turn me away from the car. the price is reasonable, 6500 and the miles are super low. 62k

I say get it. For the price you can't beat it. If you go from first to third quickly, you are forcing the synchro to drop about 4000 rpms or more in a quarter of a second, it is definately going to be a little harder to get into gear than 1st to 2nd. It's easier if you know a little bit about trannies so you can picture this in your head, but it seems normal. Hondas grind a lot
is the title salvaged due to the rear end accident? That would significantly change the price in my mind. If it was clean title, i would buy it for that much, but if its salvage, i'll think twice and offer a lower price
To each his own I guess. By the time you get done with tax and title you'll be over 7000 dollars into this car. Its 6 years old and needs a transmission (dont kid yourself, it does or at least will). So now you have to get a trans and spend time putting it in (assuming you know how to do that). Now you're 7000 dollars into the car, say 500 for a solid reuilt trans (dunno why you'd go from this one to another used one if a 60k trans is already bad in your car). So after all is said and done you're the high side of 7500 dollars and, assuming you've never done a trans swap before, probably two weekends worth of work into the car. This is a conservative estimate.
If you're comfortable with that, then get it!

my 00 si did the same. my problem ended up being that one of the clutch springs had snapped and the clutch was trashed. ive seen it in my civics(old and newer yrs.) hondas r known for the 3rd gear grind. this is due to the angle that 3rd gear is approached at. not only does it get thrown into from a straight approach(4th to 3rd),but from the side(2nd to 3rd). i ended up rebuilding my tranny and thru in some gear speed race synchros and put in a 3 puck race clutch(resurfaced flywheel).
blah blah blah. "honda and their brass synchros" As opposed to what? What other mallable metal out there does a better job than brass in being strong enough to last a long time while still remaing soft enough to not scar the outer cone race of a gear when it matches the gearspeed with the hubspeed.
Here's a tip. Gears spin at different rpms than each other. If you're at 6000rpm in 1st gear (3.25) that means that the countershaft is spinning at a near 1850rpm. 3rd gear countershaft gear is mounted onto the countershaft (no needle bearings here) and is spinning the mainshaft 3rd gear at 2307rpm (3rd gear being 1.25) (1.25*1846=2307.692) Mainshaft is spinning at 6000rpm, but somehow when you shift from 1st to 3rd at 6000rpm that little brass synchro is supposed to instantly bring that gear up to speed 3693rpm within a fraction of a second without taking longer than the synchro slider takes to slide from the synchro ring to the dog teeth on the gear.
Ever looked at synchros and seen how they engage and match the gears speed with the syncro hub? I have. Here's a small collection of synchros. And guess what, most of them aren't worn out, taken from transmissions that supposedly had grinding gears. The reason being, worn out synchro sleeves and dog teeth on gears from drivers that "power shifted"

And since this picture was taken, I have nearly doubled my collection.
(Mike, this wasn't towards you)
But the question is, should you be worried about the grinding 3rd gear? No. Should it prevent you from purchasing the car? No. Even if the transmission was BRAND NEW it would probably have the same symptom.

umm... there is nothing wrong with honda transmissions. just a lot of "user" errors that f em up.
to the original poster, i would be more concerned about the accident damage. open the trunk up and make sure the rear of the spare tire area as well as underneath is not all crinkled/bent up. other then that, it sounds like a decent deal.
