98 Accord EX Transmission
I have a 98 Accord Ex with the 2.3L Vtech, 215k miles and an auto trans. I am recently experiencing transmission/shift issues. Codes #740 Torq converter-clutch problems and #730 Incorrect gear ratio. The driving experience in the vehicle can be described as the trans does not want to shift properly, mostly into the top gears, and "hunts" for these gears while in acceleration, often "free spooling" in a sense as the rpm's run high and the gas pedal almost needs to be "burped" to get the gear. Also, when coming to a stop, the car will jump or lunge forward when stopped, like it is still working and down shifting internally.
Dealer states tranny is fried and need new one, trans repair shop says it maybe just a solenoid issue?????? This trans has 4 solenoids on the trans (2 on top and 2 below) and could be the culpret to the error codes. He suggested to test the electrical connections of these units and the ohmn readings. Any specs/service manuals on this? Also mentioned that just the torque converter and applicable seals/filter maybe in need of repair.
Furthermore, if the tranny is shot, does one do a rebuild or purchase a used one?

First test is to check the trans fluid, look for red color nd little to no odor.
If the fluid is dark get a paint strainer from a Honda dealer or apaint supply store and drain your fluid through it. If you see little globs of clutch material then your going to need a transmission. If not you MIGHT be able to save it by flushing the fluid with ATF-Z1 and replacing a solenoid or two.

Usually you'll get a code for the solenoid if the solenoids are bad electrically. Sounds to me like you need a new trans.

those transmissions are crap even the rebuilt ones....... Do a search on Dr Evil and you will get a much better replacement than what the loca trans shop or Honda will give you.
