Default installing a used transmission- risky???

Is the transmission from the junkyard worse than the one I have? What about a low miles transmission?

I'm considering one of those used transmissions imported from japan. Apparently there a many low miles transmissions in japan. Several outfits import them. I imagine that a Japanese mechanic would know to put the right fluid/oil in a honda trans as opposed to someone from "Iffy Lube" here in the states.

I have no mechanical skills. Most of the posts I've read were from people who are capable of a rebuild or an installation-- people who are doing the work themselves. We don't have a thread like this in the CRX forum.

I have a 91 civic DX, 1.5L five speed-- no mods. But most of the 4rth generation civic sites are centered around tuners as opposed to consumers.

I had a body shop guy look at the rust on my undercarriage. He said it's nothing to worry about. In other words, the car is worth keeping up. It's not going to rust our tomorrow.

The trans i have now makes a lot of noise. It has been for years. And it's slowly starting to get a little worse. Shifts fine, but noisey. Judging from what i've read, the bearings are shot.

buying anything used is a bit risky I suppose. Thats why you research the company or individual your buying from to minimize the risk of getting junk.

Don't know if anyone would carry any sort of warranty on something like that but it's something to ask. Maybe just a start up sort of warranty to make sure it works fine. IDK, maybe

Also, don't take things for granted. If you didn't see that fluid get changed, didn't change it you're self or see receipts from the dealer showing the fluid change then don't assume it's the right stuff. Chances are it's fine, but you should deffinately change it when you get it.

Not sure what else your asking for so...

Thanks for your fast response. I actually meant to post to the "ask a Technician" thead, but all the same.

I have done quite a bit of research. I'm looking at two importers both legitmate outfits with 500+ satisfied ebay customers.

Regarding correct oil for honda civic, "don't assume it's the right stuff." I totally agree. The PO using the wrong tranny oil might be the cause of the problems i have now.

TO MODERATOR,
I erroneously double posted this. You might want to move these posts to the "Ask a Technician" thread. Sorry for the trouble.
