b16 would work. If you are planning on boostin, id say keep the LS.

Nah, the gears are too long. I say b16/itr/gsr

Hopefully this won't start a debate again.
It's already been settled; Shorter gears = faster acceleration.

B16 tranny FTW. If you can spare some money maybe think about an 98+ ITR tranny, which has the 4.785 FD. What kind of WHP are you aiming for?

I would personally go with a GS-R tranny. Not as brutally short as a B16 tranny, and nowhere near as spendy as an ITR tranny. If you want an ITR tranny really bad, just buy a GSR and slap in an ITR final drive.

Also, a good alternative if you want really good acceleration is a B16 tranny with an LS 5th gear.

Well the ITR 1-5 gears are still shorter than the GSR. If you get a GSR, you'll have a little bit longer gears, and then you'll still have to spend money on an LSD and FD.

Why would you want a longer 5th gear for better acceleration?

I was thinking more for drag. I don't race outside the track or empty 2-lane road.

a b16 tranny with an LS 5th would be a dragstrip hero that you can still bear to drive to the track I ******* hate being at 5.5k and only going 65mph on the freeway.

That is your best bet. A couple of my friends did that to their B16 trannies(they also have LS/Vtecs). It's the best of both worlds. You might barely get into 4th gear at the track with the B16 tranny so it won't matter with the LS 5th but you can still get gas mileage. You won't be in Vtec going 75mph also.

That's true. It comes down to personal preference. But 65mph @ 5,500RPM is incorrect. If it was a guess, you're way off.
In my '97 ITR 5th gear (which is .848, same as the B16 tranny) I'm below 4,500RPM until about 90MPH.

Also, personally, I don't see any reason hate being at mid-range cruising RPM like 4-5K. Our motors can handle it easily. Besides, if you're running an LS 5th and decide you want to pass someone? You'll have to downshift.

When I'm on the freeway in my track car, I'm in 5th gear all day, and when I need to pass someone I simply push on the gas a little bit; And I still don't need to go into VTEC.

Same thing on sidestreets. From 0-40-45MPH, I shift from 1st, to 3rd, to 5th and I usually stay in 5th as low as 35MPH, and I can accelerate just fine without having to downshift.
