Default Finishing up my mini-me... impossible timing

Ok I got everything else straightened out, the O2 sensor is fine now and I have NO codes. I even got a timing cover and put it on, started the car up and realized I was way advanced. This doesn't surprise me, I had to advance the cam gear one tooth to get the car to run with the dizzy able to bolt up. If I turn the dizzy all the way forward (retarding) it just about makes it to the 16 BTDC mark. So obviously I need to go back a tooth on the cam gear... but I know when I do that the car won't start or run unless I hold the dizzy back... what do I do!?
The setup if you don't know is an A6/Y8 mini me with A1 (ZC) pistons, OBD1 conversion, Y7 dizzy.

got a question maybe stupid.

but do the zc pistons clear? I know the y8 head(combustion chamber is smaller) and that slapped on the A6 yeilds a even higher compression but could you maybe have piston/valve slapping?

No, it works fine, turns over normally, but only wants to run way advanced (ie a tooth up on the cam gear).

Did you use the D16Z6 timing belt or the D16A6 timing belt? I'm possitive you shouldn't use the stock belt, reason is, will always be off a tooth regardless.

Perhaps it's time for an adjustable cam gear, and premium fuel to get away with the timing advance... I don't really know though...

with those mini-mes the only way to get perfect timing is with an adjustable cam gear..

I used a Z6/Y8 belt. I have a cam gear in the mail. I reset the cam timing to TDC and tried to time it. It won't start unless I remove the dizzy bolts and rotate it counter clockwise really far, then I can bring it back to the bolting position and it sitll runs, but dies if i give it gas. When it comes back the timing is dead on.

i have an a6/y8 swap, i used the a6 dizzy, y8 belt. and my dizzy is either all the way back or forward. but it has been running for almost a year now. when we put it together, all we did is line everything up to TDC, slap the belt on and it fired up on the first try. anyways, not too much info but i hope it helps some.

Yeah I'm OBD1 using a different dizzy... everything is TDC and timing seems to be set right but the damn thing won't start like that.

So I advanced the cam gear again and of course, started it up first try. I let it warm up to time it and it dies just after it gets to temp. Then it starts back up a minute later with only a little stuttering. When it died it slowly got worse, more and more stuttering as it ran. So I set the timing, but of course with the cam gear advanced the dizzy has to be just about all the way retarded to get it to 14BTDC, and if i even think about touching the throttle it dies...

It's a SOHC... just one cam gear, and yes I am using a light. I'm wondering if it could be half a tooth off, like the Z6 mini me, even though everyone says the Y8 is fine.

Wait till you get your adjustable cam gear and you should be fine.
