Default Speedo problem need help asap.

Well my speedo isn't working. It worked fine for about 200 miles, then on a road trip the other night I was going 80 and it stopped working.Well today we changed the cable and still the same, we also change the part that goes into the tranny and it started working somewhat. It would jump around alot, then about 15 miles later it stopped. Sometimes when I'm slowing down or let off the gas, it will jump up to about 15 mph then go back to 0. I'm going on a 1000+ mile trip in a week and I would really like to get it fixed. Please any imput would help alot.

Thanks alot,
Chris

chris,

did you buy a new speedo cable? I had the same problem with mine turns out the cable sucked and was broken on the inside. Another possiblitiy is that it is not set in the trany right, try and get a look at it with a light and make sure it looks good. This is a pritty simple set up you should beable to find the problem pritty fast.

good luck

I know for sure that the cable is good and its in the tranny right. I'm just hoping that the gear inside the tranny isn't bad.

yeah that would be the worst place to have the problem at. I hope that isnt is. Could it be your connection to the cluster?

Man I'll try my best tomorrow. Its kinda hard to take a pic of it in my tranny. I'm sure its in there all the way. The clip is in its place and holding the cable in.If i take the cable out of the cluster it spins just fine, but i've tried 3 different clusters and still the same ****.

Jack stand the front, chock the rear wheels securely, start it up and put it into gear without the cluster in place, release the clutch and watch the cable spin (or not).

Unhook the cable from the trans and hook up a drill to it tighten the chuck and let er rip. If the speedo doesn't smoothly go up to about 70 (most drills around 1200 RPM) then you have a problem at the transmission side man.

Yeah, if you changed the cluster, cable and VSS sender, its the gear on your diff. Not that bad, except its a pain to change. They are cheesy plastic, so eventually things fail. I'm gonna say something got really hot in your transmission so you should probably get a whole new tranny. Sorry

When I worked in a shop an 89 Corolla gave me the same problem and the above way is how we troubleshooted the issue.

Chris, I'll try to get you an answer about the transmission tonight. I have no idea how much he wants for it.

Thanks Dan, but I dout I'll have the time to get it done before I leave. What doesn't make since to me is , when I took the cable off the speedo it spins when I'm driving it

This donkey brought his (two tone paint job) car to my house so we could figure out his problem..

We tried 2 different cables and 2 different speedometers..

And 2 different cable drives..

The only thing that I could think of was the drive gear that's on the differential

Someone find this guy a reasonably priced SI tranny so I don't have to listen to him cry like a baby anymore.

wow that guys sounds like an ***, well looks like a worse case about the tranny pick one up from a shop in your area that way if there is a problem you have a shop to return it to. shouldn't set you back much.

good luck dont let haters ruin your build.

if that doesn't make you feel better, just pretend you have a JDM Cluster in KM/h
