Default 96 D16Y7 knocking!!!

Id like to know if someone can tell me what to look/listen for in order to tell if I need a valve job, adjustment, or that there is something more serious wrong with my car.
It’s got 118000 miles, and a salvage yard distributor was just put on it before it came to me.
Its making noises like the lifters and or rocker arms are loose, but with a Honda I don’t know. I pulled the valve cover, checked for excessive looseness, some moved, some didn’t. I then bumped the engine, and different ones were loose but not excessively. I’m thinking that it was within tolerances.
Also, if I take it to a shop to have the work done, what should I be expecting (rough estimate) to pay for either an adjustment or a total valve job? Just rough numbers so I don’t get robbed.
Thanks for the help.

Well, you can get estimates if you pick up the phone and call around. You can get the high-end estimate if you call Honda directly ( ). Setting the valve lash takes 30-60 minutes on a Y7.

Y7's are loud though - does the noise go away when fully warmed up?

Thats mostly the estimate that I was wanting to know, Thanks.
The car knocks when warm. It just recently started knocking. Is setting the lash (Honda term?)basiclly just adjusting the rockers/valves?
Thanks

Yep. When you were looking at the valves, did you notice a nut with an adjuster (that uses a flat-head screwdriver) on top of the valves? You're measuring the clearance between the valve tip and that adjuster piece. You slide a feeler gauge in between those two points, loosen the locknut, adjust and then re-tighten the lock nut making sure it didn't move the adjuster with it. There is a special tool that has a flathead going through the 10mm socket so you can keep the adjuster still while tightening the locknut.

Just make sure the engine is cold and each cylinder is at TDC for the valves you're trying to set.
