Can I start my motor without a crank pully on it?
Ok so I have this pretty bad oil leak coming from the driver side of my car. Not too sure where its coming from so I'm taking apart everything on that side and I'm gonna start my motor to see where its coming from. I already re-installed the oil pump and got a brand new oil pan gasket from acura with fresh honda bond around the oil pump. Still have the leak.. So im hoping if everything is out of my way and I clean the area real good it will be obvious where its coming from.. Gsr motor
You need a timing belt to turn the cams. Otherwise it's going to get pretty ugly inside an interference engine, not to mention it wouldn't run anyway.
I said without crank pully not without timing belt. The belt will still be on there along with the bolt and everything to make sure my timing doesnt jump

Dont be stupid you have 607 post. You should know that if you try and start your motor without the timing belt on it wont start. What it will do is bend some valves and possibly expletive up your pistons.

This simply isn't true. Assuming, as the original poster already stated, that the timing belt will be retained, the engine will indeed start and run without the pulley.

Dont be stupid and read the entire post ya moron. Nothing worse than an idiot giving off false information. If you dont know the answer then don't assume. I'm already past this part but I was just curious as to why you thought it wouldn't work

Maybe a washer or a few depending on how much of a gap it was between the crank pulley bolt and the timing belt gear.. Just use your head a little and I'm sure you could come up with a couple suggestions too

In most cases, it would likely be just fine even without the bolt, in the same way that it does not walk off the cam sprockets either. If the timing belt were constantly rubbing against, and being "held on" by the crank pulley, there would be a tremendous amount of heat and wear generated, and the belt wouldn't last very long.
EDIT: Of course, I wouldn't recommend trying to run the motor without the bolt, I was simply explaining how it could function.

you ******* idiots, do u kno what a crank pulley is. it does not connect to the timing belt, it connects to the alternator, power steering, and any other accessories like the AC.
YES YOU CAN START IT if you have sufficient power in your battery but if the Alternator isnt charging it, itll die soon and you might get a battery along with a CEL light.
dont give him a bad time, just answer the question or shut up.

From what I have read in the past I would assume it is not safe to start a motor without the crank pulley as it is a part of the balancing of the crank. It is possible just not reccomended.
have you tried pulling the spark plugs and just cranking it quickly with a wrench? put a big extension on the bolt so you can get out of the fenderwell and crank it fast.
Yes you can start you motor without a crank pulley. And no its not going to go beding valves like the idiots up there ^^ said. The only problem you will have is that you main power supply will be your battery. So your car is only going to run for maybe 5-8 minutes before it dies.

the belt will not fall out as long as the tension is tight. look at all the race cars that run no timing belt covers up top and cut valve covers. do you see any of the timing belts falling off. NO
Yes you can start up the motor just hook up a cherger to your battery. and as of the oil leak, imma have to say that it is the front oil pump seal.

take the crank pulley off, put the bolt back in the crank to hold the oil pump gear on and you can crank it like normal. the oil pump gear is held on by the crank pulley. just make sure the keyway is there and tighten the bolt into the crank, nothing to worry about then.

i didnt say anything about timing covers...those arent on there to keep belt on.
i dont think it would fall off either, but i wouldnt run it like that long.

turns out my cam seal on the cam gear side was slid so far over the oil was just gushing out.. Man am I glad this problem is fixed...
To anyone who had anything positve to say thanks to everyone else think about what you say before you say it. Like I posted above, theres nothing worse than someone giving off false information especially if they dont know or dont read the entire post.
