Default WHEN TO SHIFT?!?!

Okay, here is my scenario. I have a JDM B16A in an EM1 with a chipped ECU. I have NO REV LIMIT! meaning my engine doesn't knwo when is enough! So, with that said. I was wondering how much pressure can my BONE STOCK JDM B16A first gen take? Meaning, what RPM would it max out at before it blows it **** off? My buddy told me he can take that motor up to 9.5 with the chipped ECU I'm currently owning. I once took it pass 9 on accident while trying to merg on the freeway. So, whoever had experience with JDM B16A (first GEN) can you please clearify it for me?

a bone stock motor is designed to rev to the rev limiter safely, no more. thats the resson its set there.

the chip doesnt make the internals of the engine stronger, or less prone to break. a B16b civic type R doesnt even rev to 9500. by the way, the answer is 8200maxRPM

shift when the power drops off. youre retarded if you rev past that.

the revlimiter doesnt really matter on a jdm b 16a just rev as high as you want it wont blow you will just flot the vales a little and come down a few rpms so rev away

Well where was the stock rev limit? There you go.

this is what you do.. you keep reving til you blow it up so next time you'll know

on a serious note shift at 8200 or less .. be safe not sorry

I expect that smart *** comment from that "alllllbeeerrtt" guy cuz he alwasy does it. Anyway, in regards to (schardbody) post I ALREADY TOOK IT UP THAT HIGH ON ACCIDENT! Nothing happen though, just doesn't feel any stronger.

I wouldnt rev past 8200 , if you change the valve springs you could possibly go higher but you wouldnt be making anymore power its kinda useless,

go research about your motor and it'll tell you how much hp it's making at what rpm. stick to that. if you think you are making more power beyond that recommended rpm then go get it dyno and find out yourself. but again like everyone's been saying, going beyond the redline is risky and your stock internals are not going to last long.

so is the question: where can i rev to reliably, or where can i rev to before it blows. well, heres the answer to both: stock rev limiter is 8200rpm because the engine's peak HP is at 8000rpm, revving a stock motor higher than that doesnt produce any more power so theres no point. if you want to know how high you can rev before it will break i cant help much except to say: the rods will handle pretty much any rpm you can through at them (if im not mistaken the B16b rods are the same and they rev to 9000rpm) the valvestrain is whats going to limit your rpm range, if your springs are weak even a stock motor can float the valves at stock redline or little past, seeing as how you already revved to 9500 its probably safe to say your motor is in tip top or near shape, however, this still doesnt make it safe. floating the valves causes them to stay open in the combustion chamber and run the risk of contacting the piston. if this happens you will need engine work. so rev as high as you want as often as you want, you now know the consequences.

I had a JDM B16A that I blew up by accident 4-5 years ago (Don't drink and Drive).

Get your ECu re-chipped with a chip that has a rev limiter. set it to the stock setting of 8200rpm.
Or raise it if you want. I wouldn't set in any higher than 8500rpm because your not making any power that high up in a stock B16A. But raise it to 8500-8700rpm or whatever to accomodate any upgrades you may make in the future. You definitely want a rev limiter. Honda designs your ECU with a rev limiter for a reason.

Trust me. It is no fun replacing a motor 6 months after you put it just because your ECU didn't have a rev limiter.

So yourself the headache and the money.

In case the OP doesn't understand the concept of revving an engine to make power, let me give you a crash course:

The power profile of the engine is going to be dictated by the camshaft profile and the compression. The power limitations of the engine are going to be dictated by the fuel system and the ignition specifics.

Your JDM B16A has a stock cam profile, stock compression, stock fuel system and stock ignition. The combination of these components creates a very peaky powerband that maxes out its power production around 8000rpm. It also maxes out its safety at about 8000rpm, so until you start making some significant changes to fuel trim and ignition values, you'll want to keep away from overextending yourself.

The cams have a specific and finite profile, therefore the power production will be physically limited by the camshaft at a certain RPM. That doesn't mean that you won't pick up 5 or 10whp with some bolt ons, but it does mean that revving the **** out of your engine isn't going to avail you anything other than stressed/broken components because all the air induction and egress in the world isn't going to change the lift and duration that ultimately dictates how much air and fuel makes it into the combustion chamber.

Thank you for your great knowledge without the arrogant and smart-*** comments. I appreciate it greatly due to the fact that majority of HONDA-TECH user only post irrelavent posts.

Right as the rods make windows in the block you should shift

You should look at putting in a rev limiter

you're gonna be hard pressed to get the rods to snap before something else.
