Default Fight The Oil Companies. Join the resistance!

News that we are going to hit closes to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas.
It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded in some towns.
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace.... not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action.
The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.
Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.
How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you I didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK.
This could work if everyone follows thru.

Ironic how the US is like the wealthiest country in the world and has some of the lowest gas prices in the world, yet complain when prices go up. While I concede it would suck to pay $3.00 a gallon when I'm used to $1.50 a gallon these days, I hope expensive gas prices will keep the morons in junkers off the road.

Just setting the record... I posted this in kill and im just following the threads and shutting this person up.

I am now going to explain why this does not work.
OPEC is a bunch of companies that drill and sell oil. Do you know whose equipment and transports these companies use? EXXON AND MOBIL.
For the past 2 years, Exxon has recorded the largest profit margin in quartely history. (even though this theroy was presented last year as well). The reason that this does not work is that the world trade market (based on the US economy most of the time) decides the price of oil per Barrel. Depending on how much oil OPEC produces and pumps determines the price of gas. So after OPEC pays EXXON and MOBIL to deliever a huge *** tanker to the US, the Light Sweet Oil is turned into Gas and the Gasoline trucks get all their gas from the manufactures (which you guessed it... are owned by ... EXXON AND MOBIL). The tanker trucks then deliever the gas to their designated stores and that ends the cycle.
So what happens if you boycott the big 2?
We still buy the same amount of gas from the smaller companies (who get their gas in some form or fassion from EXXON and MOBIL). The big 2 see an increase in DEMAND (this is from Macro Economics) This inturn causes an increase in SUPPLY. This 1) Raises the cost of Supply since the trucks have deliever more and more so they run twice as often. Raising the cost of SUPPLY, raises the cost we pay (also called Cost Push Inflation). So now, the smaller stores that we buy our gas from have to raise their prices due to the cost of SUPPLY and INFLATION. In a panic we run back to Exxon and Mobil stores (which I might add are INDIVIDUALLY OWNED, so we are really only hurting the owner of the store, because its just a tax write off for the Big 2) and they increase their prices because the average price at other stores has gone up.

So what have you done by boycotting the Big 2? YOU HAVE CAUSED THE PRICE TO GO UP.
Congrats.... Exxon and Mobil once again have HUGE quarterly Earnings and Laugh all the way to the bank, all thanks to YOU.

The only way to make oil prices go down is to DECREASE DEMAND. which means get out of your ******* SUV that gets 10 miles to the gallon, or quit bitching.

and if its any concelation. the US has the cheapest gas prices in the world.

I thought the prices went up last time because the OPEC nations deliberately reduced drilling and supplies...

This is just stupid. Boycotting Exxon and Mobil isn't going to do anything. Gas prices are dependant among all the companies involved in the industry. Why don't you just buy your gas at the cheap no-name station and maybe support them then?

The only good thing I think of this is that increased gas prices might make people realize that driving alone their 2 ton + SUV's 10 miles in bumper to bumper traffic to work isn't gonna cut it. I'll welcome more carpools and alternative transportation methods than dealing w/ all these cars on the road (esp since so many drivers can't drive...).

******* Bush!
LOL. Yeah, Bush is to blame. The largest gasoline price hike happened under the Clinton Administration, and I am currently paying less for gas now then I did then, but blame Bush. Um Ok.

Oh and whoever wrote this, you state that we think $1.50 to $1.75 is cheap for gas? LOL. I think that is expensive. I pay $1.37 for the 93 octane.
