Default Stock Differential... How strong???

I don't drive my car hard... everyonce in a while i will mash it on the freeway but i don't launch hard or anything.... i just want to know if my stock diff will be ok with my turbo ap1 (298 whp, 350 whp in the future)... How much hp can our stock differential take?

I think the torque rating is more important than the hp rating. Guys have been running 400-500whp on the stock diff, but as far as longevity goes, no one knows for sure.

riiiiiiiiight. so any way, the factory diffs are not that strong and people have been said to break them even with the power and torque from a stock motor. the diff case is said to be weak and it flexes which leads to broken internals. supposedly the key is to launch in such a way that you get wheel spin. if you launch too good and get the maximum amount of traction you will send the maximum amount of shock through the diff and cause some damage. but with wheel spin some of the shock is dissipated and the diff can ahndle it better.

dont think of it as the maximum torque or power that the diff can take, think of it as the maximum torque or power that can be dumped on it instantly. for example if you slowlwy set a twenty lbs weight on the top of your foot, it will be ok. but if you drop a 20 lb weight on your foot it will get all 20 lbs of weight instantly on it and not gradually and your foot will break.

so you can have a 400 horsepower engine and not break the diff so long as you dont launch it, but that probably defeats the pupose of having a 400 horsepower engine for most people.

there is a kit that is available that lets you swap a nissan rear diff that is really strong so that you could take advantage of all of that power.

if you search you will find tons of info on this board about it.

all the diffs are the same, but in reality their all different

some hold up and some blow...
some blow on a launch and some blow cruising...

some blow on a stock car and some blow on a modded car...

well even beyond that you can factor in the actualy assebly of the diff with shaft play and shims.

Factory tolerances are pretty tight. It's the wear and tear that come into play.

curiosity, does anyone know the hp rating or can someone with reputable opinions say what hp they would feel comfortable with before switching diff's or doing some tranny upgrades?

the tranny is fine.

the thing is, no ones really pushing that much HP in an s2000. this guy Terry got over 700hp out of his, but i don't think he raced it to test the tranny and diff out. it was mainly showed and on the dyno.

What's the point of having 2000whp if you dont use it?

no point.

its like how any more people buy a supra and t61 it just to say they have a 600hp supra dyno queen.

Why do you need ***** for turbo? You need ***** to throw your car sideways downhill on a mountain . You just need $$$ for turbo.

Franks right Ive seen them go in all types of situations. What it comes down to is that out of all the hundreds of thousands of s2k owners and previous woners, Ive only heard of a handful of blown diffs. Pretty good odds considered that Im sure 90% have attempted a small launch and redline shift.
