Default The perfect cam

I have heard all the hype about everyone's cams and there setup but I am still confused as to which cams to get for my setup. The car is going to be a street/drag car, which will be daily driven. I live on a small island in the caribbean where there are no tuners, so a cam that needs a lot of tuning is out of the question. I need someone to point me in the right direction given my setup and lack of a tuner as a guideline. My setup includes:

1996 JDM ITR
Rage Tri Y header
Short ram intake
Sun auto grounding kit
R Spec Vtec controller
ACT heavy duty pressure plate
Competition Clutch 4 puck sprung clutch
P28 Crome Chipped ECU
11:1 CR

I need a cam that will rip on the drag strip and still give good driveability, with a power band from about 6000-9000 rpm.

Most cams that are an upgrade from OEM parts will require some tuning. You may be able to get away with the lower stage cams such as Buddy club III+ and Skunk2 stage 2, but you're not going to get the most out of the cam.

if you want a cam that makes power to 9k then you will still have to do some tuning.. so my choice with that setup would be pro1's but if you cant tune then those are out.. seems alot of people like the rocket m22's i have never ran these cams. i had a different set of rocket cams ran in my setup that didnt work out for me.. i run the skunk2 pro3's..

what i think will help you is that rocket will normally provide a chip tuned pretty well for your already chipped ecu.

so the m22's could be the best way for you to go.. do you have the capabilities to install new valve springs? if you are planning to make power at 9k and add larger cams you need to do this.. valvesprings atleast.. you can get away with keeping the stock steel retainers.. the stock steel ones will last longer and your engine is a street engine.

There is one guy on the island who is qualified to install a bigger cam with its technicalities, but there are no dynos to tell if a cam is making more power on different timings. I am willing to install valetrain if necessary so that is not an issue. I was told that the BCIII+ cams run out of steam after about 7500rpm, so as a drag car that is not very helpful. I need a cam that will give power all the way to 9000rpm.

if you have some tuning capabilities then the skunk2 stage3 not the pro series but the older one would be a good choice they will make power to 9k and the primary lobes are very mild just a bit larger than stock. but keep in mind that these cams are large cams and will need to be set up correctly.. with these i would suggest aftermarket retainers because i of clearance issues from the retainer to vavle seal..

i was keeping that in mind.. some people seem to worry about that alot.. they seem to work well on my 11.5:1 engine so im assuming that it wouldnt be to much of a difference on yours..

The M22x seriously would be perfect for you. Every dyno that I have seen of them they have made the most power set at 0 and 0. Knowing that, even if you were to put it on the rollers your gains would be minimal. And the M22x WILL make power up to 9k, they peaked at 8,700 on my motor with a stock air box and exhaust manifold. Vtec set at 6k.
