best tranny to use, anyone and everyones opinion.!.!.
whats up everyone, i finished my motor swap into my 90 crx hf... i succesfully did a sohc zc mini-me, completly rebuilt the bottom end including pistons from JE, im using a 93 del sol head (z6) which i also completly rebuilt but w/stock internals... now other than the motor i instaled a stage 2 clutch w/a lightened flywheel from findanza(weighed 5lbs when recieved) and aem cold air, z6 intake man and a dc header with full exaust. now for those of you who do NOT know the HF model is the lightest crx!!! i am using the hf tranny and believe me the car pulls pretty decent, ive taken hatchbacks w/gsr motors and other b-series pretty hard, but of course integras have great 3rd gears which is usually around the time they start catching up... any way is it possible to install a ls tranny or some other great tranny with great gears that pull... remember sohc zc block(jdm d16)
look into a 88-91 si tranny or dx 5psd...great improvement as far as acceleration over the hf tranny....and if it were me i would look for a 90-91 specific tranny..
you cant use the b-series tranny on your engine without some kind of adapter plate..

sounds good but i want a tranny that is going to be great with speed also... now i know si trannys are great but my bro has one in his car and top speed really sucks, is the dx going to be better than the si in this situation?!?

Do you want acceleration --> EXAMPLE - "AHHHHH, MY FACE HURTS!!!"
Do you want gas mileage --> EXAMPLE - "We're moving, we'll eventually get there..."
Top Speed is useless if it takes you 5 minutes to get to it.

I don't think a streetable 4 cylinder will make you face hurt. You really need to examine what the car will be used for. Daily driving, DD/Autox, DD/Draggin, DD/Road racing, or straight out race(don't even think about driving around town in a "race" 4 cylinder.) Extreamly uncomfortable. In other words, I dunno.

id say any transmission that is low geared, si,z6 (ex) better low geared trnamissions will give you better accelleration in your motor, nothing to make your face hurt, but improved over any other d series transmission that isnt low geared or a ex or si tranny... also flywheel, clutch assembly will also help with accelleration, like flywheel will free up weight in the rotation mass giving it a faster rev for lower geared transmission making accelleration over all quicker, and a bigger clutch will get the powrer the motor makes to the ground ect....
either use a ZC tranny or SI tranny... the ZC has a shoter gear ratio for certain gears, but on both trannys gears come fast... u should do good
Since you have an HF tranny, you can use an Si tranny and swap the 5th gear over to it if you want, but it's debatable whether it's worth the work. How high does the motor rev? The Si tranny at 7200 RPM will do 145-150 or something. What is the car being used for... so how often do you need to go that fast? Seriously, you will be better off with shorter gears, maybe the HF 5th.
Are you saying that a built bottom end mini-me with bolt ons and an HF tranny is beating GSR EFs? I find that a little hard to believe, but maybe you're a good driver and your friends suck, the HF isn't that much lighter (FYI, I'm running a A6/Y8 mini-me with the same exact bolt ons, ZC pistons and an Si tranny, and I doubt my CRX weighs much more than your HF, unless you're gutted). Also 5 pounds is a damn light flywheel... lightest I've heard of is 7 (Exedy I believe). How is that thing to get in gear?

ya, keep tellin yourself that. sorry, but a z6 w/ a hf tranny is not going to beat a gsr hatch. maybe an LS, but not a gsr.

well like i said for one thing invest in a bigger clutch and lighter flywheel. that will increase your rev making it rev faster through short grears ect... and definitly a bigger clutch to get sum power to the ground.. if you are looking to beat b16 efs or gsr efs or even ls efs you could be out for a challenge if alls you are rocking is a d series motor. b16 transmissions are geared like the type r, very low gear ratio met with high rev and high horsepower= fast accelleration
just a few variables to take into consideration when looking to increase accelleration. power+flywheel+clutch=better accelleration
i had a b18 in my ef with a hdss clutch, exedy race flywheel, and b16 s1 transmission and that bitch flew at WOT. went threw the gears fast as hell!!! but you have potential with d series just put the right performance parts in the right place if you are looking for better accelleration times with your d16

Lighter flywheel? He said 5 pounds, the only lighter thing would be the plate that replaces the flywheel for automatic cars. And don't bash the D, for the money just a swap would cost you could build and/or boost a d that would smoke the torqueless B16.

but if you get a torqueless b series and boost in then you will be smoked in the d series
higher horsepower numbers, higher rev, shorter gears, turbo, you cant go wrong
u are looking at 220whp with a stock block on a d series with a great tune
b series are capable of near 300whp on a stock block with a good tune
numbers to numbers b series outweighs the d series
also the given fact that b16 transmissions can be oem lsd, which will definitly help with getting the traction down to the ground and also help with accelleration

I said, for the price. For just the cost of the swap of a b16 you could boost a D. Yes, a fully built B will beat a fully built D, but cost a hell of a lot more.
cost effective yes a d series is going to be a better platform if on a budget.
but now days ls are a dime a dozen and not the much more than a d series, and everyone knows the ls are a great boost platform motor, a b16 swap will be more like 1500 tho, plus mounts, linkage, axles ect around 2k for a complete change over

im gona have to go ahead and call b/s on that one
if my ls/vtec gets beat by a sohc mini me with an hf tranny im not gona stop im just gona drive head first into a tree
for a na sohc your gona want a zc or a a6 tranny... or even better a a6 final drive and zc gears would be the best combo
and no you cant put a b-series tranny on a d-series block

Yikes that's a bold statement.....By pull do you mean towing your faster car...
Anyway...I drove that Hf motor/tranny for years...and the only gear is "fif"
Anyway as far as mating trannies or swtiching gears,
someone said the Si tranny with the Hf 5th...that's good if you don't mind the 2.5k loss from 4th to fifth, it's like loosing comp on a cylinder.
someone said the Bseries tranny....That's just too much tranny for a d series motor, sure your tranny will be dank as hell but your motor won't be able to spin those gears fast enough to acheive something spectacular...it's not like you are "freeing" up horsepower.
I think the best bet is to sit down and figure out what you want from the motor/car, almost all your options have been posted in this thread. Find your goal and then pick from the many choices brought to you by the fellow h-t guys and gals.
good luck
