You can't switch one without the other...will look completely different, but if you don't care about looks and just need something temporarily, then do it. What I mean by switching the harness, is that the slight problem I ran into when switching was that the plugs on the actual light that the harness plugs into, doesn't match up from the 90 to the 88. They were slightly different. So I just swapped the light harness on the light itself to the other one so I wouldn't have to deal with re-wiring. Once you look at it, you'll know what I'm talking about. It's not hard at all...
This will give you an idea of the differences:
My 1990 Si with 1990 Si tails when I bought it...

Same 1990 Si, but currently with 88 Si tails...

See the difference?
Just get both if you can...spend the extra on the other light you don't need and you will be much happier that you have matching lights.

just take out your harness and put it in the 88-89 taillights plug an play homie. thats it but personally the 90-91 taillights are far better but if you have no choice i suppose it will be ok.

No soldering, no cutting.
The only real difference I noticed was the border on the 1990 that's not on the 88, and the harness difference. If you have both lights, you'll have no problem and be able to figure it out. Once you look at both, you'll realize how easy it is. Just a couple clips holding the light harness on...un-do those on each light, swap em with the new light, and you're good to go.
I swapped because I happen to like the borderless lights.
